Audlem Banter

Right,

This is it. I've not thought this out too cleverly but it's time for a banter and I'm declaring that we will have it in Audlem on my 50th birthday weekend which is November 27th and 28th. I know it's going to be difficult for some folk especially me as I'll have to get the boat finished and up to Audlem in time but I think decisions have to be made and I did promise to organise one and I've been looking forward to it for so long now.

Any takers and how shall we proceed?

Love 'n' peace,

Coming from the south but I've been staring very intently at the stoppage list to make sure I can make it. I still have a bit to do on the boat and still have no licence for very complicated reasons but suffice it to say I shall need some help to get her BSC'd before November and then my licence can be issued.

Sadly not, Jan - it's bad enough being old and everything....

Hi Jill. I plan to get past Hack Green before the stoppage assuming i sort my few engine niggles. If i make it I would love to attend. Audlem is lovely..

Yeah, near Crewe on the Shropshire Union Canal.

Found it - and it's not far from where my sister lives

Might be a bit of a plan forming

Now, for those of you who do not know the moorings near Audlem Village, you will have the 'Shroppie Shelf' & possible shallow water to contend with.

Prepare with fenders and/or plank.

Ha! you're speaking to a veteran of the the waterway that scarce can speak it's name ... Western end. Some parts of Cobbett will be in water at Audlem whereas at Bradford on Avon all of her would be beached six feet out...

It's more the blasting wind - I shall be single-handing so help would be nice at some point!

Well it's looking like we'll be staying on the Lancaster for the winter so we won't be there by boat....

... but we have a car! Provided finances allow for us to pay for B&B of some sorts with enough money left for beer add me & Dave to the list of attendees.

You know me - I can never resist a banter

PS any suggestions of cheap accommodation in the area gratefully received

I'll see how many boats are coming - possibly not so many as it's in stoppage season and check out the local B & Bs.

Edited to add this as an interim measure

A November banter sounds like a splendid idea, though we'd come by car.

I won't be working in November so yell if you need crew. Single handing in the depths of winter soon loses it's novelty... Remind us where you're coming from again? I vaguely remember it was local-ish to Birmingham. (This is my way of getting a sneak preview of this famous and very shiny boat)

Weel, she's not wuite so shiny any more - but she is lovely and when she's finished and I have a BSC and a licence I shall be very , very happy!

I'm moored win the utterly unique surrounding of Dadford's Wharf and Basin by Lock 12 on the Stourbridge 16. I don't think it will take me long to to get up to Audlem (probably 3 days if I leave the bowthrusters well alone and stop going in the wrong direction!) but I have to get the electrics finished. My friend Dave, who was the jobbing 'lectrician, is in hospital with suspect kidney failure, so leaving aside the fact that I'm very worried about him, I still have to get the last remaining bits of the electrics sorted out and I need to find somewhere to store my last remaining possessions that haven't fitted on the boat. Then I need to get the BSC done so that I can get a licence from BW as they won't accept the Annexe IIIa that Dave issued when the hull was completed because it's taken so long to fit her out with all the difficulties, it's actually expired. Ho hum! Life eh?

(Not to mention that it all needs to be done PDQ as it's nearly costing me more in diesel than I'm earning travelling up to Uttoxeter every day!)

Thanks for that linky Jill - I had to chuckle at one of the entries:-

"Berry Cottage

Monks Lane, Audlem

Delightful 2 bed self-catering bungalow overlooks meadow with 2 donkeys."

Just struck me as funny!

Thanks for that Martin - when I've moved from midnight can't be arsed to daytime will do mode I'll do the post code googling to see how expensive this is likely to be in a cab. We've avoided divorce for 24 years by agreeing that neither of us has to drive for this sort of event

Fantastic. I will be there, but I need to sort out the dog first. Please pass on my best to Dave, that sounds a bit horrid for him and I do hope they can sort him out!!!!

Dog Sorted. See you there!

I'd like to put faces to names so will contrive to be working in that area.

#25

I've been to a "banter" and now I know lots of names and faces but probably couldn't put them together correctly.

I should bring Martha to meet Boots then..
