Tar varnish on paint

Can tar varnish be applied over a previously painted metal surface?

Yes.  Depending on the prior paint the results may be interesting. Patch test first.

It’s Leyland exterior gloss, which I’ll scuff down. I thought it might be a complete “no-no”, like putting comastic over bitumen (or is it vice versa?). It’s to cover up a cream stripe Below the gunwhale, so that it blends in with the rest of the hull. I’ll do a test patch first. I could use black gloss paint but it wouldn’t blend in as well.

Beware that if you do this, then the first scratch you get will show the cream through.  We had this on Fulbourne until we bit the bullet and cleaned the whole section between the top guard and gunwale back to bare metal.

Yes. I'll just slap a bit more tar varnish on when that happens  ?
