 Small world. I used to call her " The old bat " we got on well with her and her husband Richard, she still sends me christmas cards. Next time you see her tell her you know she used to be called the old bat and swing from the ceiling and she will know straight away who you have been speaking (typing ) to

I shall enjoy that, she always takes the mickey out of me because I once gave her a handfull of pound coins, thinking (in the poor light) that they were 2p pieces.

I don't recall Bath being particularly Snobbish, It  certainly felt a lot safer and more friendly than some parts of Bristol, where it was decidedly unwise to venture at night.

Again, this is because Bristol is larger so will have more problem area's than Bath, or at least that may be a perception based upon prejudice, snobbery and fear of crime. That perception is considerably higher where I live now, but it is mostly unfounded :captain:

I agree that can often be the case, but my observations are not based upon unfounded perception, but on professional assessment. I was trained as. and worked as a Full time Youth and Community Worker in both Bath and Bristol. My work suggested that the racial tensions and poverty issues in Bristol were far more severe than in Bath.

Racial tensions and poverty are high in almost every city in the country, and Bath being fairly small and fairly affluent will obviously have less - but they are still there, along with areas that are perceived as no go (my ex-wife worked for Avon and Somerset Police so I had an awareness).

All of this Bristol and Bath bashing is probably not doing either any real justice so I am dropping out of this thread for now :captain:

Bath is so difficult to get to and from NW Bristol that for me it is a no go area.  Last time I went we had to return in late afternoon and decided to miss out the city traffic in Bath and Bristol, so we used the M4/M5.  It took an hour to travel from the Bath junction to the next one (M32).  Fact is that if you live in one or other of the 2 cities you will rarely feel the need to visit the other one.

Other pairs of cities qualify - Leeds and Bradford spring to mind.
