The alternator will need a phase top. This is usually a 6mm blade or small stud connection often marked W. It provides a half wave rectified pulse from one generating coil that the revcounter counts As pulley rations vary from engine to engine and to a lesser degree the number of pulses produced per revolution they have some form of adjustment that allows you to match its reading to your engine.

If it does not have a W terminal then you need a fly lead soldering to one of the diodes. Any starter and alternator specialist should do it easily.

I should have added do not confuse a diesel revcounter as I described above with a petrol engine one that are usually cheaper. The petrol engine ones count pulses relating the the ignition cold action and are sold as 4 cylinder or 6 cylinder units so they do not need any adjustments.
