The Harecastle Tunnel 1964 and today

In 1964 with nothing but bravado and two canoes the three of us, me George Kellet and Bill Mount canoed from Marple top lock, the rest were impassible, to the Harecastle. We hitched a lift through the tunnel and stopped dead. What we saw was a Salfordian bomb site. We camped for the night and hitched a lift from a coal boat back through.

Fifty four years later I am moored in the same place. It is Green and pleasant. Wow what a difference. Tomorrow we go South.

I think I might have been the steerer of the "Coal boat" that gave you a lift north as I remember 3 canoes & paddlers asking for a ride I couldn't have remembered it was 64 though Maybe?
