Removing the unwanted connection fixed all the problems immediately Could there be a similar problem here?

There is mention of this in the installation manual. Maybe worth a quick check before calling someone out (if you can find someone)

Yes, to me it does. I'll be interested in what Tony B thinks as he know more about those controllers than me.

He thinks they may have a place on certain specialised vehicles but otherwise they are a solution looking for a problem. Why fit something that is far from easy to disable. Its easy to disable ordinary advanced regulators/battery management systems.

Actually all I know about them is what I have inferred from Mr S's claims for them and a far to scant knowledge of  electronics. Gibbo had similar views to me, I believe snake oil was mentioned.

Does anyone know how long I can run the engine without killing the batteries if they are receiving 14.8v, I need to move the boat soon so just wondering if a few minutes will be all I can do or if they will survive a few hours at this rate ?

A lot will depend on what type of batteries you have.

If you are overly worried switch on some loads whilst you are running the engine.

The other option is to remove the alternator belt.(assuming the alternator is producing 14.8v)

Thanks Rusty, the houses are 4 sealed lead acid and the engine a standard lead acid, I can put the fridge on and all the lights and tv etc. think It will be ok for about a 5 hour trip without cooking them?

If you can isolate the house batteries from charging  whilst the engine is running (assuming the alternator is producing 14.8v) I should think if it's an open wet cell battery it would be ok for a number of hours at 14.8v.
