Midnight Towpath Lurkers.

I just went out to check my mooring pins and stuff and this bloke walked past pushing his bike in the pitch black and i mean you cant see your own hand in front of ya.

I said 'hey mate do ya want to borrow a torch ?'

His reply 'am ok thanks'

I turned my torch off and i realised he must be an alien with night vision....

It takes up to 45 minutes for your eyes to fully adjust to darkness. What was pitch black to you may have been fine for him. If you shine a torch in his face, it will 're-set' his eyes and take another 45 minutes for his eyes to re-adjust.

Walking at night without a torch is to be recommended if you know the route well. You see the stars and are far more aware of your surroundings, wildlife etc. A torch is helpful for not tripping over things but your world shrinks to the beam of the torchlight.

Interesting dave ive heard this before but ive never been brave enough to wait very long in the dark without a torch.

I should of pointed my torch in his eyes, then he would of said 'erm yer can i borrow your torch please', or had to wait 45 minutes.

Haha

lol When did they land. Are you at area 51

He did look a bit weird and he had a goaty.

Sh!t they've landed.

I have often come across anglers fishing at midnight. I don't know why anyone would do this but then again, I don't know why I often go for a walk late at night when boating.

Fisherman are strange though, they must be super brave or daft to camp out in a bivvy in this weather but they do.

I had to thor one out last weak.

Absolutely most of the time I would rather walk without a torch, you are so much more aware of your surroundings, the canal almost shines at night.

A torch limits you to the cone of light, I do occasionally use one for those rare overcast rainy moonless nights but it makes me feel strangely isolated from my surroundings

If you had a torch on near him, you would have still affected his ability to see properly for the next ten minutes or so. It can be pretty annoying when you're walking along the towpath at night and someone is coming the other way, waving a super bright torch all over the place.

The night world is a pretty magical place, most people never see it.

Moored up near Hack Green last night. Brilliant clear night around 9pm and no moon. First time I've seen the milky way in the UK for some time. Thick fog this morning and I can't even see across the canal!
