OK, why don't we use controllable pitch props, just pull a lever and the blades rotate on the hub and voila, boat goes backwards? Doesn't it? Its not the same as putting a handed prop on backwards, or is it? Chuck the gearbox away and all that stuff, just have a reduction gear.

They are available. They are complicated. They are less efficient than fixed blade propellors overall. They are less robust.

Well both actually but normally more pronounced in reverse I think
