Etiquette - boats turning round at locks

Finding no mooring at Wilmcote back in late June, we winded below the top lock to go back to a spot we'd seen above the winding hole. A hire boat coming up from Stratford was quite surprised we invited them to get past us & use the lock while we manoeuvred. But they were pretty quick, as it happened (and appreciated me wielding my windlass too) and it didn't delay us much more than a couple of extra minutes. I really can't see why anyone, in those circumstances, would assume they had a right to the lock they'd just vacated. If they'd finished winding as the upcoming boat arrived it might be a different matter, but certainly not in the situation described by the OP.

We frequently wind just below Hatton top lock and go back up the lock.

It does need co-ordinating as we would get in the way of boats coming up. if there's just one coming up then we hope they will wait and let us go up with them, but it there's 2 then we know we'll have to wait. Just need to get them either to go through, or wait in the previous lock as we can't wind with another boat in that pound.

We hope a single will wait for us but don't expect it.

Sue.

We were once waiting to ascend Wardle lock, at the head of a queue of six or seven boats, all waiting to go up. A boat came down and the steerer shouted that he was turning and going straight back up the lock. Almost with one voice we shouted 'Oh no you're not!'
