dudleyblake
Has anyone got for sensible money a Lister LM100 gearbox for sale. Alternatively a complete ST2 engine and LM100 gearbox or even any old lister with this type of gearbox.
DHutch
If no other leads come forwards I would talk to 'Primrose Engineering' Richard (Member RLWP on this site) is an expert is listers and there gearboxes. http://www.primrose-engineering.co.uk/contact-us/ Daniel
dudleyblake
I have a lifeboat with a Lister ST2 coupled up to a LM100 manual gearbox. The reverse gearbox needs freeing-up or replacing. I have had advice to sort this out .....draining oil applying heat, vinegar, etc. At the moment this does not seem to work so I may have to replace it (I can't find a second-hand unit for sale anywhere). I am absolutely amazed at the prices being charged by the specialist companies for an exchange unit, ie... Including v.a.t. prices I have been quoted range from approx £850 to £1100 and this is for the reverse gear only. For the reduction box as well £1200 to £1450. (These are hardly in the vintage category, and a vast quantity were made). It is almost makes sense to buy a replacement s/h Lister perhaps even with a Lister LH150 hydraulic box. I would be interested if anyone has any views on this
richardofaccrington
In 2014 I bought an exchange LM100 from David Ormerod in Todmorden, who reconditions Lister boxes. you could try him. he also runs a hire fleet in Hebden Bridge. Telephone mobile is 07957869641. hope this helps. let me know how much he is now charging, if you can. Regards
dudleyblake
Thanks so much. I have spoken with David Ormerod. He does not do exchange gearboxes now but as you say reconditions them. Cost between £500 and £750. Apparently he and companies like him are snapping up old Lister engine and gearboxes for spares as they are now becoming quite scarce. I suppose I need to come into the real world and pay the going rate. Regards
Mrs Tawny Owl
Hello, I have a vested interest in this in that I sell Lister spares, and Richard of Primrose Engineering (my Husband) reconditions Lister Engines and gearboxes. The reason for the cost is the price of the spares. If you buy a reconditioned gearbox from people like Richard or Dave in the above post it will have been completely stripped down, checked and rebuilt. It will have a reconditioned brake band and clutch cone (these are no longer available new so will have been refurbished and relined with friction material). They will also have replaced all the bearings and seals. The gearbox will come with a guarantee and will be sorted if it goes wrong within that guarantee period. The lister list price of the spares comes to £529 plus VAT which is £635 so you can see why the price is what it is. Of course if you have your own box reconditioned, and let them know you want just enough done to make it work it can work out cheaper as any bearings that are in reasonable condition will be left. This wouldn't be done for an exchange box, but could be done with the customers agreement of likely reduced life for the associated reduction in cost. Does depend on the state of the box though, and if yours is locked solid there might not be much to reclaim. we can't tell without stripping it down. Although the reduction box just seems a small add on, that costs almost as much as the main box because there are 3 bearings in it, one of which alone costs £300. Also with the reduction box the output shaft is often damaged on the sealing surface, so that has to be refurbished, in Richards case by machining and sleeving the shaft to give a new correctly sized surface. If you are confident in your own mechanical skills, and I can't tell from your post above, then the parts are available and the job is not beyond reasonable DIY skills. Hope that helps, if you need any more info let me know. Thanks Sue

adrianh
Hello Mrs Tawny Owl - just wonder if Richard has seen these for seal leak repair - http://www.skf.com/uk/products/seals/industrial-seals/power-transmission-seals/wear-sleeves/skf-speedi-sleeve/index.html. They can save a lot of time, if you can get them in the odd sizes that Lister seemed to use!
RLWP
I'm not confident of the life of a thin wall tube sitting over a significant groove under a leather lip seal Richard
adrianh
Yes, you have a point there, but useful if you don't have a stepped shaft which you can machine and sleeve. They seem to give a hard wearing surface though.

I'll have to find an output shaft to photograph, the grooves the lip seals put into them are quite surprising Richard
dudleyblake
Thanks for all the information regarding my original post. I have now been offered an SL4 gearbox. Is this interchangeable with the LM100?
