Two new marinas planned near Fradley on the T&M

In the November edition of Towpath Talk I noticed on page 59 two proposals for new marinas near Fradley. A planning application has been made to Lichfield District Council by Fradley Marinas Ltd. for a 60 berth marina behind Common lock (14) with the entrance below the lock.

There is also a proposal with Staffordshire County Council but no planning application yet for a 300 plus marina a few hundred yards above Bagnall lock (13) which would be on the same 1 1/4 mile pound within sight of the Common lock plan.

 

Two marinas 3/4 of a mile apart is just plain crazy. Within 5 miles of Fradley there are already 4 other marinas in existance.

Do we really need 2 more marinas in an already heavily congested area ?

Well, the Law of Supply and Demand would tend to suggest that these new marinas will put downward pressure on mooring costs for boaters in the area, which can't be a bad thing.

If the marinas you list are all full, then why should market forces be denied?

Good point. Anyone new wanting to moor a boat in Fradley area should be denied that right.

Some of these existing marinas are far from full. Streethay may be full but it's only small.

Surely all these new marinas will be for all the Continuous cruisers that C&RT want to get off the canal system . They need somewhere to go .

So the weather forecaster's forecast a sunny weekend & umpteen marinas disgorge loads a boats for two days in one small area. After building the nth marina, do we get traffic lights? Or do we have to file travel plans?
