Black Country Lee
Following on from my intro post I was wondering if anyone was familiar with Kingfisher engines and boxes?? We seem to have the hens teeth of running gear in my friends boat Sunday is D-Day as I'm off to remove the offending gearbox and bring it back for investigatory surgery on Monday. I'll keep you all posted with pics once I get it back. Where would be the best place to post these pics???

RLWP
Two cylinder Chinese engine with an unpronounceable yellow gearbox? If so, I think I have a manual for one somewhere Richard
Black Country Lee
Two cylinder Chinese engine with an unpronounceable yellow gearbox? If so, I think I have a manual for one somewhere Richard Thanks Richard, it's not the 2 cylinder (KD26) model, it appears this is the KD8 (single cylinder, horizontally mounted) engine with the 038 manual gearbox from my investigations. gazza
Wow, that's um, agricultural! Looking forward to some pics of the box, intrigued to see what the little buggers have been up to and who they have plagiarised!
Black Country Lee
Wow, that's um, agricultural! You're not kiddin lol! From my understanding this engine (KD8) is a rebranded Chinese engine designed as a stationary engine to boost the pressure in water mains!? It holds a steady 3mph, well it did lol. gazza
Its amazing what people fit in boats! Still, not a huge amount of shove is needed on a canal, it would be exciting on a river though :-)
Black Country Lee
I don't think it'll ever see a river, not unless we could time a bore to help push it back lol! Mind you it's not goin anywhere for the moment Edit to add... The boat was actually built around the engine/box combo. Black Country Lee
Couple of images, some very seized nuts so I've drowned it in plusgas for now.
Black Country Lee
Right, plusgas had an hour so back to work I went... Freed the UJ to the prop and found... Cleared all the bits of the collapsed bearings out... Carried on stripping and found... absolutely nothing else wrong! Not a thing!! I'm well chuffed Lee. Black Country Lee
it looks like you've been a jammy git! It certainly does appear that way but it points to an alignment problem somewhere along the line. Next job is the exhaust. I need to fabricate one from scratch all apart from the flange on the head?! John V
does it have a silencer in line or is it straight through? If with silencer will you make that as well or use off the shelf?
Black Country Lee
Yes it has a silencer fitted so I'm going to use an off the shelf box. I am going to re-route it slightly to make it a little quiter and able to sit on rubbers all the way back. The original tailpipe was welded into the stern holding it rigid which, I believe, partially led to the failure.
Bee
If you have the ability to take a gearbox apart I expect you know that bearings should be available from Bearing Services Ltd or many other places so you don`t need to get an original part. Good luck.
Black Country Lee
I'm off to pick up the bearing in the morning so should have the gearbox cleaned, back together and ready for painting by Wednesday morning. Picking up exhaust bits tomorrow too ready for some Wednesday welding lol. Thank you for your kind wishes Bee Edited August 25, 2014 by Black Country Lee
Black Country Lee
Just a quick update - the gearbox is all reassembled. After a good clean, greasing and fresh oil it all appears, by hand anyway, to be functioning as it should be. The gear selector cable mount has been altered so it's in line now. Made a start on the zorst but the need for a shower and a cider took priority. Got some work on tomorrow but hopefully I can get a bit more done on the zorst when I get back Lee. Black Country Lee
Well done. Thanks bud I am kinda proud of my first (hopefully, of many) marine gearboxes. As an aside I've heard back off Dudley CRT accepting my offer of voluntary work That'll keep me out of mischief for a while lol.
gazza
Sounds like fun! Most boxes are dead simple. I am going to have to pull my velvet drive apart at some point, more for inspection than repair. The worst part of that job is the cost of parts. The Borg Warner stuff is mega expensive. Result on a Duff bearing, take some time getting everything lined up. That one pot shouldn't tax that box :-)
Black Country Lee
I'll pile in on your velvet drive if you need a hand, be good to dig in to another gearbox. Parts are easy here as I've got a great machine shop not far able to turn parts, cut gears etc. Lee.
