Private is much cheaper.

Our shareboat was managed. After a while, it began to feel a bit like the management company taking over, and thought of itself as a hire firm with all its capital costs paid by the 'hirers' (owners). They even chair the owners' meeting, which is crackers! And they have absolutely no incentive to get repairs done cheaply.

As you can tell, I was a bit disgruntled by the majority decision to go with this company!

Definitely private for me. The money saved by not joining in a commercially managed scheme (at least £4,000 annually) can be much better spent in keeping the boat up to scratch. All it takes is a willingness from fellow owners to get involved in the running of their boat.

We're a private share too.

But unlike most schemes where a share gets you exclusive use of the boat for specific allotted weeks, we are a bunch of friends who co-own the boat, and most boating happens with several of the owners on board. We do most of our own maintenance on the same basis too, with minimal involvement from the professionals.

That's very true, tell you when you can and cant pick the boat, what time to have it back by etc. mention you wont be coming back because you are handing over to the next OWNER in Gloucester dock and they start to steam.

OK lots of shared owner boats there now, we saw both ex Challanger and ex Ownerships between there and Bath
