BMC 2.2 project for my re-build

Featured Posts

Hi guys 'n gals.

I have managed to secure not only one but TWO BMC 2.2 lumps, one from a "good home" and another "brought as seen" from a scrap-yard. The "good" one has a few bits missing (sold separately) and the other has most of the missing bits albeit damaged due to being battered around the scrap-yard.

Can anyone here advise me as to possible compatibility with similar parts from a 1.5 or 1.8 lumps. So far I need to cover where the Jabsco was, engine mounts, bell-housing etc and possibly an adapter plate to connect up to a PRM 150. Also trying to get my head around the "thermostat bypass system" too in case I need those parts too. Engine not yet fitted, but stuck in the back of a transit while decisions get made.

Steve.

Very few parts of the official marinisation were common across that range of engines.

I have no idea what you mean by "the thermostat bypass system" unless you are installing it as a direct raw water cooled engine. If you are then the pressure valve form a 1.5 might do the job but you will have to make up the pipes. Keel/tank cooling will be far easier to set up.

The physical size makes it very unlikely that 1.5 or 1.8 flywheel housings etc. will fit a 2.2.

Not much compatibility with the 1.5-1.8

Do you mean a PRM 160?

Raw Water pump goes on timing cover and splines into the Injector pump Hub

A belt driven one could be used instead

Hot water take- off is achieved by removing a hex. plug from the rear of the cylinder head

Water return branches into the recirc. water pump stub, quinton Hazell RH101 is the hose for it

Had to run an errand halfway through composing my last post and now realized there's been more replies.

I don't intend using raw-water cooling, just got to fabricate something to cover the space where the Jabsco was. I intend keel cooling, as I now have more available keel with the engine room-back cabin arrangement. And thanks again to TB who took the time to explain some keel tank details with me before i registered here. I remember reading somewhere about a bypass thing for the engine stat but can't remember the details now. Maybe it was for closing off half of a twin-tank set-up ?

And CT, yes the g/box is marked as a 150 so I assume that to be correct.

If you can`t find a flywheel housing it`s worth ringing round black cab specialists, London, l`pool, Glasgow all have lots of black cabs and although the engine is a bit long in the tooth now its worth a try.

Which would be great for putting an engine in a car. The housing needs to have mountings for the feet to support the engine and gearbox

The marine gearbox adapter housing is not something you will find in a Black Cab parts dealers

The BMC 2.5 ceased production around 1981,unlikely that any licensed Cabs use that engine these days.

RSVP is right again!

That's my maternal and paternal grandfathers you are messing with. They're both dead, so if they come to haunt you for disarranging them, you only have yourself to blame

Yes, there should be four feet. Two at the front based on the vehicle mounts, and two at the rear. These are generally on the flywheel housing, a special part for marinised engines

Thank you Richard, I do have most of a housing but it's broken with a piece missing so not ideal. I should also add that it's a 2.2 like those fitted to the Gypsy (which I have driven for some years). Might be possible to patch ? I don't know but another possibility.

This is another reason why I was hoping for a match with a different size engine.

Perhaps.

Yes, the 2.2 went into Gypsies, and are relatively bomb proof. I resurrected one that had been sunk - twice. On the other hand, like the 2.5 they are becoming a little rare, so finding parts is more complicated than ordering off the shelf. Stuff like gaskets and thermostats are fine, water pumps are not

I have the cylinder head for a 2.5 in the workshop at the moment being sorted for a client

Can you post some photos?

I posess a gearbox adapter housing for a 2.2/2.5 it is the TMP gearbox variant, may be possible to adapt it to whichever gearbox you decide to use?

There is a parts supplier in Ozland selling Quinton Hazell water pumps for the 2.2/2.5

New and not a bad price,75 quids or so

^^^^^

Buy this! Chances are it can be adapted to another gearbox
