Engine on

I want to have a relay that switches on when the engine is running and off when the engine is stopped, a bit like the ignition on wiring in a car. This is so that items that should be off, when the engine is off, automatically stop and I can't leave them on and flatten the battery.

It is an Isuzu diesel engine with a 4 position start switch but I cannot get at the rear of the switch. is there anywhere on the engine I can connect to ?

If the alternator has a "D" terminal, that should do it. It's the same terminal that connects to the warning light bulb and is often used to drive a split-charge relay.

Another possibility might be the feed to the stop solenoid on the fuel pump

And yet another possibility is wiring a relay such that it receives its negative coil feed from the oil pressure switch.

.. or a voltage sensitive relay that closes when the voltage exceeds say 13.9 volts ?
