Someone else has put up on youtube some Standard 8 film we shot in 1976, including the first rains after the drought.

Std8 was never brilliant, & not improved by transfer first to VHS tape & then digital!

Includes various in-jokes from the day.

Watched the first five mins, very evocative, especially as our first ever boat holiday was on the Nivernais. The caption says Canal from Marne to Saone - is this the same canal as the Nivernais?

No, it's another internal bit of humour.

No - there is a quite separate canal de la Marne à la Saône, now just renamed by VNF as the canal de Champagne à Bourgogne, but known nevertheless by the batellerie as the Houilly canal as it passes by two places with that name.

It's nice to see, but scary at the same time, as it doesn't look that far back in time, how nice and quiet the canals were, (when we were young) and when everything was still possible without all the administrational hassle, virtually unspoilt by hireboats.

 

I enjoyed watching the good times you had on Beecliffe.

Thanks - that was excellent. Actually, what struck me was the sheer quantity of commercials on the Heuilly then. There aren't so many now, still a few that help to keep the canal depth maintained. No hire boats yet though. Of course, all the ecluses are now mechanised, so no winding.
