Our boat is due it's first Boat Safety Certificate. Is it a standard charge that all inspectors make or do they differ.I suppose travelling costs must come into it somewhere. Or is it a negotiable charge?

Mine last month was £130

It depends on the particular inspector and what systems you have on board for them to inspect. For example, a gas-free boat should be a bit cheaper.

One thing to ask is whether an inspector will charge you for a re-test should the boat fail on something which can be rectified within a certain time period. If you find one who doesn't charge for a re-test it saves a bit of stress because if everything isn't perfect at least you know you're not going to get charged any extra.

A good inspector will bring a few temporary labels (gas locker, battery, fuel, vents, etc), in case you're missing any, and other bits & pieces, so that he can pass a boat on minor faults and doesn't have to make a return trip.
