Engine servicing

Over the years I've done the simple stuff of replacing oil/filters on my Mitsubishi K3 engine...but it probably needs a more 'thorough' service. Can anyone point me to where it explains what might need checking/re-setting (the manual suggests 'Compression setting' 'Engine valve clearance' ' Fuel injection pump/nozzle')

I'd like to see what is involved in these and I've done a search on here but can't see any info on what to do . If anyone can point me to any info on what is involved I'd be grateful

If it starts easily from cold in the winter and does not produce much smoke then my advice would be that the injectors and compression are probably perfectly serviceable.

 

That just leaves the valve clearances. Turn engine to get one valve fully down/open. Mark crankshaft pulley. Turn engine one turn so mar is back where you marked it (1" either way is OK). Adjust that valve. Repeat for the other valves. Take care with the "feel" on the gauge with modern engines. The valve springs are far weaker than those of old and it is all too easy to have the valve held slightly open by the gauge.

If you're really curious (and keen) try getting hold of an unwanted model or similar scrap engine. Download a manual and then begin taking it apart, carefully taking notes. The snag is tools can be a bit expensive.

It may well be within your capabilities stuart23! I would take the injectors out, as it is a simple job, and gives such a good idea of how much carbon is accumulating in the barrels. Something simple to check, but a rigmarole to get off in boats, is the sump, which will give you an idea of any dodgey wear from the quantity and quality of any metal particles settled in it, and in old engines, the mesh on the "oil pump sucker tube bit" may need a bit of degunking. Be carefull not to loose any gunk tho as you dont want it sucking into the bearing oil holes.

I would say that it depends on how many hours it has done.

After maybe 3000hours the tappets will probably need checking.

You can take out the injectors and have a diesel specialist check them, probably for free. If they are knackered it cost about £40/50 each to repair.

But if everything seems OK leave well alone until you have some symptoms, like black smoke or misfiring - These engine last many years in NB's
