Engine (Kingfisher )

My Engine is Kingfisher copy so l was told when l bought the boat

But l don't know much about it and l am having a few problems at the moment

it keeps over heating. .

I changed the thermostat and it seems ok but haven't been out on a run yet long enough to see if it over heats still

I changed the water pump last year.

I can't seem to find any pictures of my engine online or manuals. the John Shotbolt boats which is what mine is all seem to have the KD 26 in them. but l don't know if thats the same with mine. How can l tell. I don't know anything about engines at all l need to start learning. can anyone help.

Also l need to buy a new cranking battery where is the cheapest , l don't want a cheap and nasty though l want it to last.and where can l get another thermostat so that l have a replacement on board now that l have replaced the one l had.

For info try:

The thermostat is probably a standard automotive part with its temperature stamped on it so any motor factors should be able to supply (or even Halfords if you must).

Cranking batteries do not have much work to do on a well maintained boat and are kept pretty well fully charged so life is not really an issue. They tend to outlast the domestic bank so any make will do. A motor factors or battery specialist will probably be a little cheaper than a chandlers.

When I hear someone saying they want a battery to last I tend to get a bit jumpy because most domestic batteries are killed by the boater (I know its not a domestic battery in this case) and spending more will not necessarily provide a longer life. Much research in the archives may be called for.

Is it like this? If so it's a Shanghai Tractor Corp 3 cylinder 395, or 495 if it's a four cylinder.

No its not like that one. I can't find a pic of one anywhere so will have to take a pic when i next go donw to the boat.

I been quoted 75 plus vat for a cranking battery.

and no one knows where to get the thermostat that came out of the engine. may have to ring the guy we bought the boat from as he had a spare so he will know where to get another.

going to the boat show at the end of may at crick. I am looking for an inverter too. Just bought some solar panels form maplins . so batteries will have a better chance in the winter from now on.

These are the engines Churchward is referring to. Ours (a 3 cyl) was a faulty one from new caused, I think, by rusty bores due to bad storage but apart from that when it was running ok it was a superb engine, very solid and steady at slow tickover (425rpm) and the gearbox was a nice smooth job, no clunking when drive selected. I feel sure you must have one of these if it's a Kingfisher copy, if so try here for spare parts

I have a KD26, oil, fuel and air filter are all common types available from motor factors, so guess thermostat is too.

You don't say how quickly it is overheating, try running it wothout a thermostat in to see if it resolves problem first, if it is still overheating check you don't have an airlock in the system.

(The gearbox cooler gave me serious headaches to purge when i changed the antifreeze).

Follow afore mentioned link to kingfisher site, has downloadable workshop manuals for all the information you could ever need.

Hi

This has been dealt with in detail on previous threads but I can't find any. We use 'Photobucket' if you Google it and register you can upload pictures and files from your computer, all you have to do then is place your cursor over a picture and a drop down box will appear, click on the second row down called 'Direct link' this will automatically copy it and when you go back to the forum and post, click on the 'Insert image' icon, a box will drop down with 'Image URL' highlighted in blue, clear this box and right click on it which will allow you to click on 'Paste' once it is pasted click on 'Insert image'

Job done.

Thanks Re; the picture.

its a bit blurry the wife took it.

duztee It appeared to have air in when it was over heating coz when we changed was emptying the tank as it was over flowing the water level went down, we could hear big gulps.

But it is always doing this. and the thermostat was realy rusty and appeared to not be working. It might have solved the problem now, but I need a spare thermo as l like to have spares for everything.

I need to find out if it is a Kd26 so that l can get the right handbook/manual for it.

I am going to take a picture when l next go down.

Thanks Re; the picture. here is the thermostat hopefully

You have only posted a link, looks like you have clicked on the wrong icon i.e. the link icon which is a picture of a chain, to the right of it is an icon with a picture of a picture! that's the one you need to right click and paste.

KS well obviously from the picture the thermostat is already out of engine.

Simplest way to test it is to pop it in a pan of water and heat it on the cooker, you will then see if it opens as the water heats up!

Would suggest with the amount of rust shown that you might need to flush the system, best done by connecting a hose pipe from a system with plenty of pressure (not usually a BW water point!) and connect to produce a reverse flow through the engine. then fill with anti freeze with good rust inhibitors.

Make sure you have buckets, rags, old paper etc because it is surely going to be a messy job!

Yeah I put a new one in . l have tested it and it don't work. Thats why l wanted to know where to buy a new one. there was already a spare on the boat when we bought it.

I just wanna replace everything l use so that l have the spares again.

I have been all over the internet and can't find anyone that does this one. even been on ebay and asked peeps that do the car ones. if they know where l can get one.
