Harmony
Hi There Can anyone suggest a good gearbox mechanic near Shardlow. I developed a "leak" on the selector shaft late last year which I duly repaired with a new seal from PRM my engineering skills are limited and would really feel better if someone specialised in this field could give it the "once over" . We hope to be going along the T & M around mid March with another couple and the last thing I want is to spoil their holiday any contacts please. Thanks Ivor (N.B. Richard T
Charlie at Sileby Mill boat yard is pretty good with engines. Otherwise talk talk to Norman Millar at his chandlery as he knows a lot of people in the area. PRM150s do tend to leak - we have given up on ours and check the oil levels regularly. I made a dipstick out of a piece of wood which makes the job of checking oil levels easier.
Keeping Up
PRM150s do tend to leak - we have given up on ours and check the oil levels regularly. I made a dipstick out of a piece of wood which makes the job of checking oil levels easier. Our first gearbox was not a PRM, it was a Borg Warner, so it didn't leak - it just fell to pieces internally instead. For the 15 years since then we have had first a PRM Delta and now a PRM 150, and for the whole time it has been my dream to be leak-free. In fact my ultimate dream would be to have no oil leaking from either the engine or the gearbox - but I realise how preposterous that fantasy is. It is difficult to keep fluids where they are supposed to be but it is possible. My previous boat had a leaky BMC which I replaced with a Beta Marine and a PRM Gearbox. Both were oil tight and reliable. My present boat has a Lister Canalstar with PRM box and some 3000 hours on the 'clock', the engine starts well and is reliable but leaks oil although so far the 'box is o.k.
