brass securing screws for portholes

Featured Posts

Hi,

I'm trying to source some securing screws for one of our brass portholes (missing since new, and boat fitter is uncontactable).

They are hex headed, domed, countersunk. I have no idea of the manufacturer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as local (Cheshire) chandlers/ boat builders don't recognise them.

Hello there hex headed normally refers to a conventionally headed bolt or set screw, do you mean allen type internal hex head.

I have some 6mm slotted head countersunk (CSK) brass set screws, if these will do the job let me know, I'll send you a few

Keith,

I'm struggling to get my head round the description. From what you say it sounds as though they have a threaded portion that then runs into a countersunk portion (which sits in the porthole securing hole) and then you have a shallow hex head (like a normal bolt) below a decorative domed head. In that case the appearance would be that the portholes are studded with hex headed domes. They would be fitted with a spanner rather than a screwdriver. Is this description correct or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

I just had a google and none of the screws I found tick all your boxes. You could try to email this place who look like they have a fair selection http://www.illingworthsupplies.co.uk/ Or have some made in India or China and sell on the rest (10,000 or so  )

I know exactly what you are describing, but do not have any idea where you would obtain any, what you need is a specialist fittings factor, usually found tucked away in a small unit on industrial estates, I know of a couple local to me and could pop in some time and enquire.

In the meantime have you tried boatman's cabin, they stock a range of portholes etc. and may be able to supply the screws.

Hi Roger,

you've hit the nail (or should I say machine screw/ bolt) on the head!!! The dome is quite shallow and the screw is fitted with a spanner.

Thanks to everyone else for your replies, I'll chase the most promising ones up.
