I follow a related site that covers where I live. I can follow ships up to Manchester, then go and have a look.

I have just finished a 4000 mile sea trip on my boat in the US and we installed AIS before we left, it has been the most amazing thing to have onboard. In the dark especially in heavy shipping lanes it has been essential. Technology, love it.

love these sites... brilliant!

 

just wish you could fit this technology to all your friends boats and watch them on the inland waterways!!

I'm fitting an AIS transceiver in the lifeboat, eventually.

 

They're pretty affordable now and it's nice to know the big boys can see you.

There is considerable concern that Pirates may be using this technology to stalk their victims.

Yeah that's a nightmare, of the Essex coast.

 

Seriously, though, I think I'd be switching my unit off, in known danger zones.

On Google Earth you can see the positions of some narrow boats, how does that work..anyone know..?

yeah we use this system at the docks in liverpool when we want to get eta for docking ships...... roy
