Overnight stops - Middlewich to Liverpool

Featured Posts

We're running a trip this week from Middlewich to Liverpool. The L&L is new to me so planning overnight stops is a bit more difficult.

Here's what I've come up with (bearing in mind we have to be a Hancock's Swing Bridge for Wednesday evening for the escort in):

Saturday - Billinge Green Flash

Sunday - Lymm (seems a long day bearing in mind tunnel timings / stop lock / nice weather so busy canal)

Monday - Worsley or Leigh (but where is good to stop?)

Tuesday - Parbold??

Wednesday - Hancock's Bridge

Thursday - Eldonian Basin

Friday - Salthouse Dock

I'm not convinced about these overnight stops, and could do with some pointers towards good visitor moorings en-route.

Don't forget to give us a wave if we're passing you!

Just walked passed your boat with our black lab. We are also moored on Billings Flash having come in the opposite direction to you. We stopped at Anderton boat lift last night, Lymm Thursday, Worsley Wednesday, (was OK but a bit noisy with motorway traffic), Parbold Tuesday - excellent, just moor under the bridge. Locks at Wigan dreadful - perhaps your guests could help!! All journeys easily achieveable - hope this helps. John.B

In my opinion Lymm is a must for a stop. It's a lovely place to stop and has an excellent Italian Restaurant as well as other shops etc.

I've also moored twice at Worsley facing the famous black and white house and just before the sharp left under the bridge if going north. Bit noisy with traffic (and one PITA which was a mini motorbike ridden at high speed on th towpath by some kids). Otherwise it was fine.

Neil

Just realised that you passed me at Lymm Cruising Club this morning where I was bottom blacking my boat. Not sure where you intend to stop tonight but would recommend Dover Lock and then go through Poolstock Locks in the morning.

Check the Stoppages section as BW have today announced an emergency stoppage at Parbold. Ask at BW Wigan on your way past for an update

If shops are needed to stock up best go ahead to burscough , tesco .chandlers ,p.o ect right by the canal.

that may be the last chance for supermarket as the supermarket in maghull "bridge 14" is closed while it gets took over by another chain.

best to stay at the swing bridge before no 9 overnight if you want to be away from traffic , this bridge is only a footpath bridge and a bit less lively , just walkers and horses.

come through friday and the weeds are well down compared to the past trips and did not need to go down the weed hatch at all although plenty of muck around.

hope you enjoy the link and liverpool , we did but i am a biased scouser

We made the following stops in the end (in case anyone is remotely interested!)

Sat - Billenge Green Flash

Sun - Lymm

Mon - Dover Lock

Tue - Parbold

Wed - Swing Br 10 (very good tip that one - good pub at Melling and away from the Scallies in Aintree)

Thu (tonight) - Eldonian Basin (12 boats here - a full house!)

It took us 4.5 hours to get from Hancock's Swing Bridge to Eldonian. 10ft of 4in diameter plastic ducting and two tarporlin cut off the prop on the way.

Anyone interested in the Liverpool end of the L&L and the Stanley Dock branch might like to have a look at Junes Waterways World which has photos of leisure boaters going up to Bridge A, and down the locks to the docks, 42 years ago.

Is the chandlers new? I cannae remember a Chandlery per se, just Tony's yard by the swing bridge. Nice mooring by the Rufford branch and a nice pub that i whiled many a happy hour away in.
