Sugar soap (from DIY type place) is good for nick 'o tine on varnished/gloss painted surfaces.

A dishwasher tablet dissolved in water is much the same.

It's not kind to your hands (like fairy liquid) so best wear gloves.

cheers,

Pete.

Use microfibre cloth also with said soaps, this cloth picks much more grime than ordinary cloth, also use it for buffing the varnish when dry, you'll get surprising results.

Sugar soap Do not use sugar soap if you only intend to clean varnished wood. Sugar soap is designed to be used as a preparation for painting, it contians chemicles that will take the shine off the varnish as it's designed to do with paint. Milder soaps are best for cleaning gloss paint :D

Should be OK for general cleaning - try an inconspicious area (as long as it isn't scrubbed with a scourer which will take some gloss off anyway):

It's usually washing soda (sodium carbonate) with some detergent, so if really worried just get some washing soda and add detergent :)

If the original poster is a smoker the surfaces won't stay glossy for long :D (give up smoking!!! :) )

cheers,

Pete.
