New Marina Ooop North

Hi,

All the best for the new year to those on this list.

For those interested in things oop north, the local council gave permission at last for a new 200 berth marina at Red Lion Bridge, Scarisbrick on the L & L albeit with several restrictions.

The developer is the same person who owns the Fettlers Wharf and St.Mary's marinas on the Rufford Branch.

Work starts in the new year, but no work can be carried out between March and July (the bird breeding season), according to one of the restrictions.

For those who know the area, the boating entrance will be opposite Red Lion Caravans, just under the bridge.

Updates and photos when things start to happen on the UKCanals website.

Negotiations are also taking place between developers and the land owner for a marina at Lydiate, by the Running Horses.

Both marinas should offer facilities for the 1200 plus boaters per year who will be coming this way (according to BW) when the Liverpool Link opens.

Unless there's been a change in the last 6 months or so since we sold our NB at St. Mary's marina; Fetlers Wharf and St. Mary's are not owned by the same people. Very much the opposite - they don't give each other the time of day!

Be interested to know which one is developing at Red Lion.

Apologies for the mistake, thanks for pointing this out. It is the owner of Fettlers Wharf that is developing the new marina at Scarisbrick.

I went up there today. They are putting up a fence on the towpath which doesnt look very nice. You used to be able to see across to southport. I think the marina should have built its fence on its own land rather than on canal land. why should the canal land be reduced for them?

Residents’ victory after Lydiate Marina planning application refused

Oct 28 2010 by Linda Foo Guest, Maghull and Aintree Star Here

RESIDENTS are celebrating after the Lydiate Marina planning application was refused.

Sefton Council’s planning committee rejected the development at Bells Lane despite the planning officers recommending it for approval.

Councillors refused it on the grounds that the best farming land would be lost, and it contravened Sefton’s green belt policy.

The marina was to be developed on farmland along the west side of the Liverpool-Leeds Canal.

Leading the campaign was Bells Close resident Maureen Roche who is delighted the planning application has been rejected.

She said: “We are so delighted, all the residents rallied around and fought this. We got together and did something.

“We are absolutely thrilled and this is a victory for the small people and where they live.

“We were not against the marina, just where they wanted to put it.”

Residents are now waiting to see if the developers will appeal.

Last chance?

Last minute appeal lodged to build Lydiate Marina

May 26 2011 Maghull and Aintree Star

A LAST-MINUTE bid has been lodged to appeal over plans to build Lydiate Marina.

Lydiate Marina Company submitted the appeal on the last day, May 15, it was qualified to. Plans for the marina were rejected last October when councillors on the planning committee refused it, despite planning officers recommending it for approval. It was refused on the grounds that the best farming land would be lost and it contravened Sefton’s green belt policy. The Bells Lane development was proposed to be situated on farmland along the west side of the Liverpool-Leeds Canal and hold 135 boats.

A 250-named petition was gathered during the consultation process and residents vow to fight the latest appeal. Opposing the marina are Wendy and Peter Greener, who live on Seafore Close. Wendy told the Star: “If this is passed then it paves the way for other development on green belt, gobbling more land. There is strong opposition.”
