Hi Hymn, welcome to the forum. Congrats on your new boat!

Which model of Lister engine do you have? People will need to know, in order to advise in any depth.

Or post a photo...

Welcome to the forum, but not enough information. Lister have made so many different models we can't really say much unless we know the model of engine or you post a photo so we can identify it.

This is an example only, so don't act on it until we know the engine. The small air cooled Listers, so SL and RL, have a nasty habit of filling their sumps with diesel and that may get oil into the exhaust.

On more modern Listers, it might be caused by faulty injectors.

In both cases, difficulty in starting, so lots of turning over on the starter could cause this.

So model of engine, how easily does it start, any exhaust smoke after a few minutes of running, and how full is the sump?

PS,  it might be a symptom of excessive crankcase pressure that can be a badly worn engine.

Flecks of black (very) oil ..........when an engine runs light ,oil creeps along the surface of the exhaust ,and eventually forms drops on the end of the exhaust..........Some engines were so bad for this, the exhaust would catch fire ...............a very recent example (last week) is Bransons cruise ship in Hobart ...the pall of stinking diesel exhaust covered  half the city ....Branson was spruiking the environmental credentials of his poxy cruises ,and has now got into a huff ,and exited  Oz  for less fussy markets ......with no EPA rules.
