Higgs Lock no 83 K&A

Good Morning, we have just had great difficulty getting through this lock due one to top paddle out of action and big leakage between the bottom gates. I've tried ringing Cart but still too early, we'll try again later.

We ended up using a piece of old carpet and a pole to bock the gap.

Well done. not many today would sort it like that

For anyone else having trouble, sometimes the order of closing the bottom gates makes quite a difference on the K&A locks.

If the gap is too big and you can't get a level after closing gate 'A' then gate 'B', try emptying the lock open the gates then close gate 'B' first, then gate 'A'.

Or better, try both orders of closing and compare the gaps before even filling it.

Reminds me of my early canal trips back in the early 70's. A tarpaulin and Tirfor winch were necessary items for successful locking... :)

Thanks Mike, we did try closing the gates after escaping and they didn't look much different closed either way.

We helped the next boat through with our carpet and then the third boat owner turned up with a barge pole about 2 1/2" dia which he said he stuck down from the top on these occasions. Also worth knowing about.

Good grief what canal was that, I never needed a winch in the 70's but quite a few gates needed several people.
