As long as it starts, you will. Diesels do not need any electricity to run once they have started, I doubt it will happen, but you might lose the warning lamps and instruments if the start battery is not in good condition, but the engine will run. Just take a little bit of extra care if they stop working.

 

There is an auto-electrical place in Burton who sorted me out.

Great thanks! It’s got a brand new fully charged starter battery. So fingers crossed.

Sorry, it looks as if they might have gone. There is one place on Google but no phone number or website and although it is in a similar area it seems to be a different place. Google gives Dents Auto Electrical.

If you don't use the power from it for other than motoring in will last for weeks

Thank you everyone for all the support, advice and help. 
 

The boat started fine this morning and happily got me to the boat yard no problems. 
 

a new alternator will be fitted when I pick it up.
