Shrewsbury & Newport Canal

Any blog is limited by what can be said in the time required, but it is quite a useful summary of the location.

It should be noted that the Shrewsbury Canal was a tub-boat canal that formed the connection between the Shropshire Canal and the town of Shrewsbury on the Severn. It did not join the Severn but terminated at a distance from it. Maybe ariel's views might benefit the understanding of other locations that still can be seen such as the Trench Incline Plane, a surviving lock chamber, The aqueduct over the Tern, or the approach to Shrewsbury.

The Birmingham & Liverpool Junction Canal Branch from Norbury to Wappenshall provided the means of narrow boats (made to fit the Shrewsbury Canal dimensions) to pass onto the Shrewsbury Canal to reach Shrewsbury and also has features such as Forton Aqueduct, Newport Locks, and the approach to Norbury. There are records at Staffordshire RO that detail the traffic at Wappenshall Wharf listing carriers such as Crowley and Neptune.

As to the Shropshire Union Canal, it should be said that the Shropshire Canal was closed and part reconstructed as a branch railway. The Whitchurch Branch at the terminus end is closed, as is the unfinished Prees Branch, The Weston Branch is another section that is closed and much of the Montgomery Canal from Newport to Welsh Frankton has sections that are either closed or are under restoration

On the Chester Canal the original staircase to the Dee was altered when the canal to the Wirral was made and the bottom two locks removed. There is also a deviation on the Chester Canal over a railway tunnel. As to the original Middlewich Branch only a part was made

So when making a statement about the Shropshire Union Canal open and closed parts it is best check historical accounts.

There is a nice set of detailed survey maps on the Shrewsbury & Newport Canal trust website that detail what is left between Norbury junction and Adeney House, they are at the bottom of this page https://sncanal.org.uk/the-canals/

Brilliant! That will help me massively for future videos
