Yes Zeus is an excellent guard dog.

Raises the alarm to people falling in the cut, passing boats, dogs, ducks, moorhens, swans, Autumn leaves falling on the garden etc.

In short he is very gobby! ??

Lily our GSD Is not gobby, so wouldn’t have helped out your cyclist. She only barks if someone comes onto, or knocks on the boat. She does sound very impressive then.
As she gets older, she is becoming more vocal talking to us, as only GSD’s do.

You are lucky!

The reason why Zeus was put up for rehoming was because Zeus barked so much that his previous owners had a noise abatement notice served on them as a result of complaints from their neighbours.

When we first got him we had to put frosted film over the windows so that he couldn't see what was going on outside.

If he could see something moving he barked at it and then the next thing would come into view before he had stopped barking at the previous thing.

Now he barks much less, especially if in an unfamiliar environment. However fter 5 years of training he is still reactive to other dogs (inconsistantly, he will bark at one, then when he sees it later on his walk will ignore it and vice versa), motorbikes and the foxes which visit our garden.

I know what you mean about GSD's being vocal. Zeus has a much wider range of barks and growls than any of my previous dogs. It was the strange barking that informed us something was wrong last night.
