Very excellent and well researched original post. We have a 3 MiFi, having previously had a dongle, and have found the network good subject to signal and their customer service has been very good when we have had problems. Did not know that there was an aerial socket on the back of the unit; may explore this as it is useful to know. If you are a BT Broadband customer, they will give you a code that will enable you hook into other BT Broadband wifi units so you can surf the net when you are away from home. We use this and also on the boat with a mag mount aerial going through a booster into a laptop via a USB cable. The booster (Bear Share) is powered by the laptop. What we would like to do is to have the option to get a wireless router to serve the 2 laptops on the boat. Having experimented to date with various options and equipment, to date this has not worked. If anyone has any suggestions they would be welcomed.

From my researches - which aren't exhaustive - My unconsidered experience is:- '3' best coverage everywhere, especially at home where they're the only supplier with 3G that works. Customer service good (the Rep: spoke excellent English) EE - nearly as good. Haven't used CS Vodafone Poor general coverage, good near major towns. otherwise v.poor. CS - absolutely abysmal, Reps are pleasant and helpful but their backup systems are really, really the pits. That results in inconsistent and unreliable information. The company's approach appears to be designed to deter you by any means possible. Folks like them because of good deals on phone tariffs, but they don't understand internet data needs. a Bit like BT....

Mobile data prices seem to be dropping. This year I managed to get 80gb of data from BT via doubling 'cause the house broadband is BT for £20 and today Vodafone offered me 100Gb for £30. My 2 year EE data plan which I am half way through now looks a bit expensive at £45 for 60Gb.

Thanks all. I compared a few options and went straight to buy the EE package with the Osprey router and 50GB for £30 per month. It is 10 times(!!) faster in my flat than my BT landline broadband. I should have done this even just at home a long time ago!

I understand very little of this but after giving up on getting a constant TV signal, on advice from a passing Open Reach chap, I took my iPad into the EE shop and asked if I can put a sim card in it because I had found success in the house by plugging it into the TV and using the various Apps to watch whatever programme I fancied. I explained that I lived mostly on a canal boat and the two young staff members were very enthusiastic. The contract they offered included a "dongle" into which they put the sim card which meant I could have effective WiFi in the boat almost anywhere on the system and so not only connect my iPad, but all other Wifi type devices. As soon as I got it back to the boat, I plugged it in and watched TV all evening without a single breakup of picture. So I can not only watch TV but also use my telephone, use my laptop, search the internet etc etc. I have thrown the TV areal in the skip and the dongle is quite happy sitting on a low shelf beside the TV and does not need to be outside or in a window. B..... Luxury. The EE staff were great apart from then trying to sell me BT Broadband for the house - I let them off though because it was the first day they were allowed to sell BT to prospective customers. Edited just to add that it is 4G - which apparently is important!

Yes that is with "3" it does vary but we are < 250yds from the local mast. Wasn't going to a get BT FTTC as everyone else on the estate is getting a third of that at best, no matter who the supplier is. Its run through a Huawei B818 which was not cheap, changed because the free "3" B525 before that only gave 25-35mbs Most of the variance comes from Wifi interferance from neighbours so I monitor what frequencies they are on and move mine accordingly, all the high bandwidth stuff is on ethernet, not that I wear an anorack

Tonic required. Send in your photos of what is nice on the waterways now.

Within BT it was known as "Rugby Radio Station," was when I worked for them. Once went to look for a job there, the place was full of bearded boffins wearing cow gowns and sandals. All gone now apart from the main building which is a museum. -
