Hi, Where are you based? We had ours professionally done once, took the guys 2 days. Oddly enough I was thinking of asking them again as I have had 3 eye surgeries since October and am waiting on my 4th. Pete

Typical delays at Watford and Foxton Staircase Locks
baldlimey replied to RAB's topic in General Boating
When it gets busy it can be a looooong wait. Last September we got to the bottom of Foxton at 1pm and had missed our chance for the day, eventually got out of the top lock 11am the following day. I think we were just very unlucky but..... Peter -
Anyone else notice that the crick boat show wepage has lost the music entertainment link? Do we think they are doing nothing this year? Hmmmm Peter

I signed up to Giff Gaff PAYG last week so it is possible but their website does make it look like you have to have a goody bag. Create your account, order your SIM (declining goody bags several times) then you can add credit. It is very clear this non contract company want you to sign up to a monthly bill. Peter

South West Durham Castle Class

Thanks all, That last photo was perfect and mine is in the same spot.; What it also confirms is my leak around the calorifier is defintely not from the PRV. Cheers Pete -

Boating biker, The picture of the end of you calorifier looks very familiar. So it is likely I just have not disassembled the bathroom enough to find the PRV. Cheers Pete -

Thanks John Disassembled the bathroom cabinet back, which is where my shower drain pump is, and nothing obvious. May I ask where you calorifier is, mine is under the back steps. Cheers Pete -

Thanks Matty40, I cannot find anything which looks like the PRV valve in the picture, not sure if it matters I think my tank is copper. Can it be remote from the tank? Maybe I don't even have one. Pete -
Hi, I know there are a few of these boats out there, unfortunately the original manufacturers are no longer about. Have a leak around the calorifier and wondered if it may be from the PRV valve (it drips off round the immersion heaster) but I cannot find it would any other owner have ever found it. As a general rule where would it normally be located? As a general question the leak only seems to happen when the tank is hot, is it likely/possible that adding an expansion vessel may help? It should go in the hot water feed pipe between the tank and the first hot water tap shouldn't it? Thank (again) for any help or advice/ Pete

Has anyone tried running a 240v fridge off a seperate inverter. I'm wonderin if this would use less/more/the same power as a 12v fridge? We have the regular inverter charging but I believe the resting power consumption for these are quite high so I was wondering about putting a small (500w?) inverter with a very efficent 240v fridge or would I be eating through more power than a 12v fridge? Any advice gratefully received. Pete

The one plumber the marina recommends is semi retired and not wanting to do jobs which involve very tight spaces. I have checked and their only requirement is they have the usual liability insurance and they sign in. Cheers Pete

Hi, We have a leak on our calorifier, I am pretty sure around the immersion heater. I am in no way confident in my plumbing abilities so am looking for some in the Nottingham area who may be able to come and fix it. Anyone have any recommendations please? Thanks Peter

Hi, Anyone near enough to the closure on the Leiceter Line between locks 39 and 40 to see how the level is doing, the first notice yesterday suggested it may be closed all week. Cheers Pete

Unless you are really commited to battery management you can kill expensive batteries as quickly as cheap ones. I treat then as a consumable so buy the cheapest I can find but expect to replace them every 4-5 years. Pete

It is a cruiser stern and whilst in theory should be a dry bilge it always seems to have some water in the bottom, we keep the drains clear and have a cover for when we leave the boat. Also have a seperate drip box with it's own bilge pump under the stern gland but water always seems to find a way in. Cheers Pete

Thanks Blackrose

Hi Blackrose, The baseplate under the stern gland, yes commonly immersed in water. I have a lovely (and small) wife who has 'volenteered' to get down there with the Vatacan. Pete
-
Just been poking around near the stern gland and pulled off, what look to me, like large chunks of rust almost looks like a sheet of rust I would guess 2-3mm thick. I believe not a lot of metal converts to what looks like a lot of rust but does anyone out there know? Next job on the list I guess is to get down there, scrape away and repaint. Cheers Pete

I think it was the isolator switch it was very manky on the contacts so I have cleaned it back to bright metal and hit it with electrical contact cleaner and so far so good, inverter on and no flashing this morning. Tracy the 12.64 was after sitting for 6 hours after a 7 hour run, does that still imply shot batteries.
-
Thank you again all At least I not feel totally stupid after seeing the answers on how to measure the cable. I will get the fridge out again and open the isolator switch. Pete
-
Thank you all With fridge on but the compressor not running 12.71v when the compressor kicks in 12.42v (that is this afternoon after around a 6 hour run). It is an old fridge, to my certain knowledge 12years, probably as old as the boat 16years. Really dumb question I am sure how do you correctly measure cable size. I have a hole gauge for drill bits, do I stick the copper core through there? Pete
-
Hi, 12v shoreline and the light was blinking, just one blink (low voltage I think?). Checked the batteries and they were at 12.64 anyone know what an acceptable voltage is at the fridge. The really odd thing is I turned the inverter off (not on shoreline ) and the light stopped and the compressor fired up. This is the first time out of the marina for 12 months and the batteries have been on charge via the inverter. I have not yet separated the batteries to test individually. 12.64 after a 7 hour run and then engine off for 6 hours. Any thoughts/suggestions more than gratefully received. Pete

Improving moorings in the East Midlands Region
baldlimey replied to frangar's topic in General Boating
There used to be rings past the no mooring section opposite dobsons. The tow path has been upgraded and the rings have gone I have yet to try and get a pin in the very narrow strip of earth left. Please PM me if my location description does not make sense. In Nottingham there used to be rings opposite the canal house and fmc pubs, when the edging was replaced the rings were not. -
Got it done Thank you both Pete
