  1. I bought a similarly cheap and cheerful own brand random orbital sander from B&Q years ago (unnamed grey thing), and have had lot of success with it. I tend to go for medium to coarse disc initially and then a finer one to finish but it saves so much time it's no big deal doing things twice. It is worth avoiding the suspiciously cheap discs as suggested.

  6. Yep. Either insulate the inside of the steel or get more air circulating. Or both.

  13. You are unfortunately looking in two of the most expensive counties in the UK. You may be better looking for farm / industrial land away from the water with good access for the sort of wagon that would be needed to shift the finished boat. And remember to add enough to the estimated costs to cover inflation over the far-more-than-you-expected time to complete.
  14. The answer is surely in the small print of the individual policy.
  15. To be fair the number of trains that Southern actually manage to run probably means that's OK.
  16. Can you not get enough grip for the required tweak with some long nosed pliers?
  17. It's been said but to reiterate, this is as much about learning to gauge what the boats doing in the water and where the front is in relation to other stuff. When approaching locks uphill, ask the crew to leave the gates shut and practice motoring up slowly* until your just touching them, or a foot short if you prefer. When you steer the boat around bends note where the pivot point is - usually just back from the half way point. Use a lifebelt or similar to mark the spot until you're sure you've found it. Between the two you should then be able to build a picture in your minds eye of what the boats up to in relation to the banks, bridges and other boats. All the above is relevant in clear water. The advance course is about learning to notice when the boat tells you you're moving into shallows, cutting the corner too much or going too fast for the available depth: veering away from the shallows / refusing to turn into the corner despite your best efforts, breaking wave going out from the stern on the shallow side(s) or just being an awkward bastard to steer. Get all that about right and you'll be standing pretty much in the same place all the time, reminiscent of being stood in the hatch on a trad back end. * I would hope slowly is obvious but didn't want to be accused of encouraging ramming the gates.

  20. There are those who would say Sankey Canal, 1757.

  22. Wickes do what I think is very similar in MDF but it's a painted finish. If I've understood right, Search 'beadboard'.
  23. Wow! (And thank you). Short version of a story of mine .. Police objecting to our proposed Designated Premises Supervisor for some rather spurious reasons. He'd been running the place for about 6 months without any bother, but the police were persisting and we went to a tribunal adjudicated by local authority Licensing bods. It all ended well when we pointed out the just-retired Police licensing Inspector had chosen our venue for his leaving do....
  24. I get that. One of the thrusts of this thread is that it's incumbent on the owner to create a pleasurable experience for potential customers so as to entice them in. I don't doubt you've seen people 'in drink' served alcohol, it's an interesting balance to be maintained. We've got customers who can do 10 pints and remain gentlemen (and ladies) and others who we cut off after 4. It's the ones that go from genial to arsehole in the space of half of lager that catch you out. I think alcohol should only be served by outlets that can be held accountable in law for the social consequences of over indulgence of the products they have sold, as we are. At the moment responsibility falls back to the last premises a drunk can be traced back to, even if they only served the final half I've just referred to - generally a pub or bar in the later part of the evening. I support the notion of a minimum pricing policy, or a change in the law that requires the supermarkets to contribute to the costs of policing, street pastors etc. financially as we do via a late night levy. The last serious disorder we had in town was after a free concert in a park where lots of people were drunk from supermarket / off licence booze. If customers leaving my place had caused 1/10 of the bother I'd have had my license suspended.
  25. Necking a significant amount of supermarket booze before a night out. We have to use magic powers to somehow know how many more are going turn them from happy to twatty, serve them one less than that, then ask them to leave. It also makes sense that the commensurate drop in revenue to the pubs contributes to their eventual closing.
