rats and mice do not like garlic. so leave garlic gloves around the boat in winter. this also keeps away any vampires too.

the mesh seems like a reasonable idea. i cant see why that wouldnt work as long as the mesh was pretty wide.

do you think tug style boats with portholes are better at keeping thieves out ? what are the weak points on a boat. im considering a live aboard but only with portholes. i see the boat im looking at already has extra fixing steel beams on the inner side doors. although the laptop and a tv is the best of what could be stolen. living without 'things' has its advantages. also, to keep thieves away have plenty of books. "books be like garlic to a thief."

hullo. im fred (ian). i keep having these dreams that i want to live a pastoral existence in the sanctity of a narrowboat. to indulge in the solace, travel and observations of both nature and time. i keep thinking about it, then going back to the rat race, then thinking about it again. obviously, im back to thinking about it. i have just about enough to buy a boat and have a job where i can work from a laptop, so i should really do it. im 40 !!!!! aieeeeeeeee.........

no. its not a thread about the people of humberside. its about steel hull thickness. im looking at living aboard. im interested in a 54ft boat for sale. 1994. i will get a survey done. its cert is to 2012. when i get the survey, how thick should a good hull be for a boat that age, and at what thickness do they start to need re-plating - (and) is that very very expensive ? i heard that earler boats were made with thicker hulls. i am completely new to losing money on boating, but keen to try. any replies appreciated.

yes. yes i have. all these points were covered at the public meeting in accrington. if you had concerns you should have raised them through the appropriate channels at this time. all further applications for this system have been closed and the solicitation of the chair or AGM will result in the loss of any BW licences without any process of appeal. the people have spoken. and they want leccy boats.

funny enough, ive been chomping on the idea of sailing away and heard this comment on radio 2 vine show the other day and it made me laugh. general opposition to narrow boaters and caravan livers. based entirely on jealousy and bitterness. a case of 'i have to get up at 5am callcentre time and work for a huge bank busting loan on a bitter little terrace in a bitter little northern town, and i dont see why anyone else should escape from it. i like the X factor and believe everything the tv says to me. i dispise books and freedom and instead prefer the microwave lifestyle of the sheeple majority. also, my life is hell..... its good to know some people simple choke themselves to death with bitterness and inner cowardice.

in 50 years time all canal boats will be powered by turbo jets and speeds increased to 45mph. bankside fishermen will use futuristic baits such as moon worm and saturn flies. by then the pike fish will be able to walk on land and many boaters will have their pantries raided by these forward thinking fish. also in 50 years time all clocks will be banned on the canals. instead futuristic users will get time information direct from a transmitted bean from BW HQ, which is picked up on a futuristic heads up display on the hatch. by harnessing fiture technologies rather than calling them witchcraft and evil doing, narrow boaters will enter the gates of the 22nd century sitting on the backs of factory workers, medics and fairground roustabouts. i also think that by this time the entire canal system will be electrified.

i think in 50 years the canals will be full of futureistic 'hover boats' while most boaters will be wearing futuristic overall made out of a tough teflon twine. also each future boat will be equipped with lazer guns at the front for taking out floating pallets, obstructions etc. locks will use assisted gravity which can be operated from a laptop.

hi all, if you worked the pump service, where do you dump the dumps ? i mean. if i were to start a mobile pump out service on the LL, where would i be able to offload the live aboards ? 1. are there BWW sites where these tanks could be emptied and new sanitary chemicals bought ? 2. whats a good price to offer for the service ? 3. how much are traders licences ? 4. anything else i cant/havent thought of ? im considering taking the plunge as a complete newbie, following a dream (although i was not expecting to empty toilets) and possibly trading on a canal. i havent made any steps yet but it seems like a pump out service is a key need. as well as coal and the usual. any advice would be gratefully received.
