    mooring

Through the ring back to the boat and round turn and 2 half hitches... http://www.animatedknots.com/indexboating.php?LogoImage=LogoGrog.jpg&Website=www.animatedknots.com
  2. Omg, 1 small plastic tray can do all that, thats amazing lol...nope your wrong there isnt clouds of smoke at all cos its burning so fierce there is none at all...try it, and give me your results...then you will know. I can light the fire with firelighters and kindling and coal but sometimes takes ages to get going, the plastic tray just gives it a boost to get going, i just light it and walk away knowing its lit.
  3. Have you tried this technique, We save our plastic trays that most meat comes in, like chicken breast, mince, and other containers.. etc etc, Helps cut down on rubbish too, we put in a firelighter, then about 5-6 pieces of kindle, then fill the plastic tray with coal and sit it on the top of the kindle and light, works wonders and gets rid of your rubbish at the same time lol...
  4. Same for us, no noise extra from it, its just a alternator and a small box extra to our 3000 watt victron, i use it for computer and still charging batteries, my wife uses big iron she had from the house it is about 2000watts and works fine on tickover...i think it would be a good addition and we are the same no electirc hookup, also have 200watts of solar and a wind turbine(sure the wind turbine takes it out rather than puts anything in...its getting close to me going under a low bridge just to get rid of it)...
  5. We went down the whole way last week, after high line its gets slower and slower, lots of plastic bags on the prop, then a jacket, took us ages and had to clear the prop ...
  6. Why not look into a zoom router from maplin instead, does the same and they sell a cig lighter power supply too, works for me, and does wifi too. Never had a problem and our voltage has gone loads lower than that..
  7. Sounds like fun, we did limehouse - teddington 3 weeks ago and are doing limehouse to brentford on sunday again, was very tame last time out here's hoping for more fun this time eh...not sure what my mother will think about it lol..
  8. we trt to not let ours go under 12.2, but find when charging with engine it never really gets them to full, but with the genny i have charged them to float switched it off and watched some telly and run the fridge, and got up in the morning and its still beeen showing 13, but we do have solar power too, i find it better to always give it a genny charge at least every week if not more.
  9. 1 metre away, must be big car wheels..... we have same idea, similar to car wheels on a rope but not a metre wide...tend to tie up the stern close to bank so dog can get off and throw 56 lb weight over the side on bow tied to the rope works well..sometimes using 1 wheel near bow to stop rubbing on the side.

    Sky

Get it for a house then take it to the boat..
  11. Its your choice to have a new paint job every 7 years, so with this new shiny paint job is the inside going to have a new refit?
  12. If your not paying for a mooring which like we arent your fuel cost will be nearly the same as the saving but you have more freedom, as for the costs of repainting at £800 per year sound silly to me, and £2000 maintenance i havent spend that in 2 years, not even half that, done my own oil changes etc, and had it blacked which cost about £600, not spent anything else on maintenance and done 3000 hours in 2 years, i would say more around £5000 a year to run. We lived fulltime on the boat and moved almost everyday for 18 months. Coal wise i would say 1-2 bags per week in the winter using free wood when you can.
  13. Almost 2 years on our boat as liveaboards, and as i like my internet i wouldnt give up the boat just for that cos everything else beats a house hands down...got my long johns ready for the winter lol....
  14. ours works on gas, sat at the stern at side of bottle...
  15. All cosy and warm with wood/coal burning stove inside, last winter.

Our springer is nearly 2 years old, he loves the water
  19. Agreed, we have a narrowboat 58 foot, so when we done the network, in no rush say 15 years time, our plan is dutch barge on thames....
  20. 1) Any useful tips for a first time boater!!!! 1) Bump into bridge, 2) Bump into other peoples boats on bends. 3) Always pass moored boats as fast as the boat will go. 4) Leave paddles up when leaving locks. 5) Leave gates open on locks to save time. 6) Dont giveaway to other boaters at bridges. 7) Moor the boat in a winding hole or lock. 8) Stop for lunch in the water point or on the white pins by locks. 9) Open paddels as quick as you can so boat hits lock gates. 10) When coming upto lock and it appears empty ram the gates it will come open. 11) Enjoy yourselves!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  21. I have a £100 petrol chainsaw, a big axe and a big sledge hammer, and a grenade splitter. i find its best if i come across logs say 10 inch long i dont need the chainsaw i just split em with the axe. But definately worth having a chainsaw, and for a full winter you will never have enough wood, dont make the mistake of buying house coal from the local garage.
  22. If you have a stove start collecting wood soon and fill the roof full of it or you will run out..
  23. we went from teddington to brentford last week with printed out map, we missed the turn slightly and was turning into the basin area, a sign would be a good idea... Also did limehouse to teddington, was fun, was expecting the worst but to be honest dont know what the fuss is all about, did find a bit of water in the gas locker at the front but the vents are a bit high for the water to go back out..
  24. Magnetic mount with a g clamp works well..
