  1. i took the advice of Keith in Sawley Marina Chandlery .he was very helpful. spiced the rope and fitted everything together.I think there is a spec that decides what anchor weight/length of chain/rope you need for a given length of boat.
  2. Gossip around the marina is that he'll get a bill from BW for £1500.Don't know how true that is tho.Didn't the helicopter come from Skegness?

  5. If you weren't happy with the performance of a surveyor who would you go to for advice?Do they belong to an association with a regulator who decides whether they are good enough at what they do?After all a lot can depend on the quality of their reports.
  6. It's shocking to see the amount of rubbish in the undergowth when the leaves drop.I suppose it gets deposited during summer, out of sight in the greenery.Saw quite a lot along the T&M last week. Some of it in out-of-the way places must be coming from passing boats.
  7. M.C at Penkridge had their usual vast stock yesterday.Whent past Argos in Long Eaton and they had curtain poles in the window as a sale item.
  8. Sat waiting to go thro shardlow on friday when work boat Clifton pulls along side.steerer engages me in conversation.I'm suddenly thinking why is Silkstream going down and Clifton isn't? he sees my expression and bursts out laughing.Turns out that what looks like an ordinary boat has a hydraulic leg at each corner.Whenever the boat stops they just lower the legs and lift the boat out of the water. Neat?

    Oven & hob

We made the mistake of buying a smaller replacement cooker when we refitted didn't half cause grief from No 3 son who's a kitchen fitter. If we'd gone bigger it wouldn't have been nearly as much of a problem.
  10. Just got back from a run up the T&M to find my friend 's put in an offer and yes I am excited for them.it's just like starting out all over again Trying to find moorings etc.I'll get them a large bottle to celebrate with anyway.Or maybe buy them a virtual pint
  11. Yeah so could I.I wasn't allowed to chose any of the boats we saw that had vintage engines when we bought our first boat.I supose in some ways having a "proper" engine room is like having a shed when you live in a house,it's somewhere to escape to every now and then. I was concerned because our friends are very new to boating and have sold their house to live afloat as seen in waterworld.I thought that having a vintage engine as well as learning the rest might be a step too far or then again I might just be jealous.Cracking boat tho.

  13. Thanks!Looks ok for spares etc.anyway.it sounded a bit noisy when started for a demo, but i suppose thats to be expected with a 2 cylinder.it hasn't put my friend off ,he's going back for another look and maybe put an offer on the boat.
  14. I have a friend who's looking for his first boat to live on and he's found what seems to fit the bill in every way. However this boat has a Coventry Victor horizontaly opposed two cylinder marine diesel giving 35 bhp.Has anyone any advice about this? I would be a little nervous about what i feel is a "vintage" engine.
  15. Had a po box during the transfer from house to boat We took it out while we still had a land address. As soon as they found we were on a boat and not living at the previous house we were told it was not possible to continue the box. They would not accept a c/o address. However one sensible person at the Birmingham office told us to just continue, which we did until we got our residential mooring.best of luck with the jobsworths.
  16. I had the same problem with Direct line insurance.the girl told me that if i lived on a boat ,albeit in a marina, I was classed as being of no fixed abode.Thats possibly why some people call them front line insurance, cause every calls a battle (alledgedly)
  17. canaltime seem to have boats out at odd times during winter
  18. The wife says it's better to do something and regret it than regret never having done it at all. Congratulations .A drink on me in the virtual pub I'm sure you won't regret it!
  19. I just love being asked if they can supply me with gas and electric. The reply is -my gas comes in red bottles and I make my own electric. The kitchen people get the reply - I didn't know that you did marine installations.
  20. Do you mean Miracle leisure's Brass Mate as seen at Crick. The wife has used it but put it on with wire wool and swears that the wool was most effective. Not sure the brass mate was worth the expense. i think we'll try the ketchup.
  21. A generator run in a confined space will not put out the same power as one that isn't.If you enclose it too much you will have temperature problems
  22. We've got canaltime boats here that seem to do that anyway
  23. Might be wrong but my interpretation of section 7 is that this only applies where a member state's inland waterways connect with those of another state. Also anything less than 350 tons or with adisplacement less than 100m3 Appears to be exempt.(I hope) Unless some jobsworth interprets the English channel as a waterway .Just imagine all narrowboats having to conform to The Rhine Vessels regs Having generated a eadache I'm off for a pint of the non-virtual type
