  1. Not by me, nooooo! The towpath telegraph will have to do in this instance
  2. It was 'snagging' not delayed delivery to which I referred, actual unfinished work on/in the boat. I presume that someone had some 'bespoke' requirements which were not completed when payment was requested and 'promised' after handover. I had the info 2nd/3rd hand and cannot remember the fine detail, only the gist. (senior moments, it'll come to you all...) The oft heard 'we've got you over a barrel' - 'lose your boat and the deposit or pay and wait' - nasty people!
  3. Have a 'Google' (UK) for "flip-up seat" - including ""s. If you're looking for economy, I'd start with taxi breakers. It's a start edited to remove photo & snip quoted text.
  4. I don't know if it's still the case but AFAIR Delta used to fly into Manchester from Ohio, and surely there's others? Heathrow is not the centre of the 'world' That way you are still relatively close to L&L or Shroppie/visit Chester.
  5. Looking around the 'net, many owners seem to be happy with their boats. I have heard one or two tales of woe. All I will say is to make sure the boat is FINISHED, and to spec. BEFORE you hand over your hard-earned cash. Do NOT accept promises. Getting promised completion work done can take over a year. - I kid you not! Finish and quality probably depends on the UK importers contract spec. with the manufacturers, the business ethics of some leave a lot to be desired.

  7. Pete - Don't know if these are 'proper' cans or the ornament type, but I remember seeing an article on uk.rec.waterways (from 1997) which I have reproduced at the bottom, in full:- Googling AG Lester & Sons also reveals chimblies, buckets, cowls & coolies etc. "AG Lester and Sons - bespoke manufacturers of sheet metal products from canalware, paraffin lighting and lamps, oil bottles for the rail industry ..."‎ Website www.aglesterandsons.sagenet.co.uk does not appear to be working. Hope it's a 'holiday' thing and not another mfr gone to the wall. ......and it's just off the INNER Ring Road. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Roger Guiver <ro...@windlass.demon.co.uk> Date: 7 Nov 1997, 08:00 Subject: Buckby cans direct To: uk.rec.waterways In article <136BC3BD0...@snow.csv.warwick.ac.uk>, Dr Sean Neill <ed...@snow.csv.warwick.ac.uk> writes >I've just got an unpainted 2 gallon can from A.G.Lester & Sons in >Birmingham - price 20.87 UKP which seems quite reasonable. >They are happy to sell direct, but they make them in batches so you >would have to wait till a batch was made and collect it (I assume - I >did). They also do other sizes, and brass trim. >They are in Erskine St (just off the outer ring road - tel 0121 359 >1018). >Sean Thanks for the info...For me this is exactly what this newsgroup is all about..sharing information about my passion for the canals and all that goes with them. I have been trying to obtain an unpainted can for ages, but understandibly all chandlers want to make their cut even on unpainted ones. -- Roger Guiver NB "Elapsed Time" Napton
  8. Oh yeah? you know this, how?....
  9. For more ideas, I would then start looking at the locking arrangements for up & over garage doors (mine is a Henderson of some 20yrs vintage), where the central handle turns a cam which pushes out two long flat strips/tongues into or behind the jambs. Link this with two bowden cables, also via a cam, linked to the back of the cylinder. These cables will need to be long to allow for the movement of the door hinges ie turn through 90deg. Consider also the multi-point locking systems on upvc doors, I can't remember what they're called and my Screwfix cat. no longer shows them. You may need to build in a plan 'B' elsewhere, in case of mechanism failure.
  10. Good idea...............and this one's a little less expensive and a little more readily obtainable clicky No doubt there are others!
  11. Suggestion: Of the two or three spam/porn posts that I've seen, ALL come from overseas. Is it possible to make any applications with a non-UK location, wait 12/24hr for Moderator approval, during which a quick 'Google' will often reveal their motives. Merely stating they have to wait for approval may put them off. Just a thought
  12. On the 'other' door, a narrow piece of angle, or channel will prevent a jemmy being used against the weatherstrip. If you can't weld this, then you can drill/tap/screw to the steel (and fill over the screw heads). I can't offer any suggestion on the hinge sides, except, as you say, a snug-fitting hard rubber strip to close the gap. One question, though, where is your boat to be moored? Marina, online public or offside? I ask this because there are likely two? types of thief about - the opportunist, who will not tackle anything that doesn't look easy, and the one who thinks - Ah! bloody big padlock, must be something worth having in here! If you must use a padlock, then a 'disc' type or similar is best so that they can't get in with bolt croppers, but hasp/staples can be cut unless you use a sturdy cowl/cover. One of my friends uses only a decent mortice lock on the stern doors, all other security is built inside (bars), except the weatherstrip protection. Think about protection for your slides, too! Fit a flashing LED at each end of the boat - the thief will not be sure what it means and move on. This was the case when both my friends boat and mine were on the same online public moorings - other boats were attacked, ours weren't. Put a radio and a lamp on a timer for the dark hours. How far should one go?

  21. What a picture you paint!
  22. Bring it on! I firmly believe that we should have prisoners doing all manner of 'community work' automatically as part of their sentence a la US chain gangs. Don't start me off on the luxuries they have in the nick - they are supposed to be punished for their deeds.
  23. I agree, and whilst we're at it, a hefty charge should be raised for all those non-emergency 999/112 calls that we hear so much about.
