  6. Can anyone else hear the 'Jaws' theme starting?
  7. She looks skinnier there than she does now, must be the paint job or Im right and even steel boats get middle-age spread..
  8. He doesnt specify where it was, it's sort of an account of his trip to Nottingham. He mentions the pub (assumably Ye olde trip to Jerusam) and the castle aswell. Reading the rest of it, I think hes near broadmarsh. I'l get out my old maps and investigate! Then he goes back to Northamptonshire and London. He was in the silk weaving business, so maybe the canal will crop up again.
  9. It does sound like you'd be in the tillers range if it snapped back on you, but a good idea if it stops your canine companion trying duck impressions
  10. I made Sloe gin, Elderberry liqueur, Damson sherry and vodka in time for christmas and we drank it, so what can I make now that theres no sloes etc? My winery is empty apart fron one bottle of oak leaf wine! Ideas please
  11. I dont get to sit down 'cause then dad nabs the tiller
  12. Where are the seats positioned?
  13. I caught a bit of 'Who do you think you are?' on tv and there was a mention of the Grand Junction carrying people looking for work in the 1800's. There's a couple of mentions in some of my books of people using packet boats 'cause they were more comfortable than the stagecoach. Edited to add: Just looked in one of my ancestors diaries (1828) and there's a mention of the Nottingham prison boats! Saw the poor wretches destined for the colonies being herded like cattle into the canal boats. They are a pitiful sight in their chains. No doubt for some their only crime was to try and feed their children
  14. not quite sure I follow, you stand in the cabin on the step (or perch on the roof, as carlt says) to steer on a traditional stern, that way you dont get knocked in the water if your tiller jerks. Or have I got the design of your stern mixed up?
  15. We had a lot of problems with reverse gear taking Linnet up for her rebuild. I got really good at using strapping posts very quickly! We fixed it by tightning the brake band up. Okay; we cant reverse fast, but we can do it
  16. His mates were very apologetic. We spent the next hour trying to persuade Sunday that the fishing rods weren't going to bite him. In the end it took one of the blokes' sandwiches waved just out of Sundays reach..
  17. I was walking the ponies down the towpath in their training gear when we met with fishermen and their long poles. The first 3 thought it was magic, showed the ponies the stuff (first time they've ever seen fishermen) and moved things over so we could fit pastl, then the 4th one thought he'd be clever, didnt move his stuff and smacked Sunday on the bum with the pole to make him go past quicker. He was suprised when Sunday tried to bolt, I shouted at him and his three companions gave him hell too. It serves him right that one of his mates stood on the pole.
  18. Hmm, I like that aswell. Maybe a buckby can with some of dads old ships on... Anymore pictures of that sort of design?
  19. I like that idea! let me find some silk... My plan is: lancaster/spitfires - table cupboard roses and castles - bed hole cupboard and back cabin doors steam engines - door to engine room shetland ponies - engine room doors And maybe a guiness toucan somewhere..
  20. You can run an SR2 with confidence! Linnet is a big girl of 60ft, 6 planks deep, and our little 11hp lister has taken her on open sea three times (before the Lancaster canal joined up to the system), on rivers and canals with out a problem. And on alot of her escapades shes been towing Humphrey (a little pontoon type boat) and Tishey (an old wooden jolly boat) aswell/ I recommend SR2s, they're good little engines and very tolerent
  21. What sort of things were painted? I'm preparing Linnets backcabin for painting and wondered how common roses and castles were with the old boats, number ones in particular? Ive seen a few photos of backcabins where you can see the table cupboard panel has a dog or a fighter plane emblazened on it (done during the war perhaps?) I've a vague recollection of being told how an old boat painter was being interviewed and somewhere in it the interviewer said "It must please you that most of the modern boats have you paint roses and castles" to which he was given the answer of "No it doesnt! I hate roses and castles! It's always bloody roses and castles!" Anyone out there got photos of backcabins with something different on? or seen an old back cabin with something different?

  24. well, you don't want to cane it between the pounds.. so long as your not dragging a wash behind you, your speed's okay. locks have different filling speeds, so there's not a difinitive time. When we brought Linnet back, we were averageing 4 minutes a single lock (yes, were very sad. we timed ourselves!) while using check ropes. having said that, weve done alot of locks
