Widmead Lock 89 to Colthrop Lock 91 - Thatcham Saturday 18 April 2009 - Sunday 19 April 2009 Works are being undertaken by Scottish and Southern Energy overnight on Saturday 18th April between the hours of midnight to 04.00 am for the removal and placement of overhead power lines to enable replacement of a defective timber support pole. Users are advised to proceed with caution and expect delays during the times indicated.
  2. Had a similar problem last year. Although accumulator fitted. Problem eventually proved to be with the pressure valve fitted to the pump which was blocked with crud. The valve works with a rubber diaphragm which senses pressure change to operate the pump. Intermittant operation caused by time taken for pressure to be sensed through the crud. hope this helps.
  3. The obvious solution is a lined chimney, where the inside liner takes all the tar directly into the flue pipe. Otherwise look in the yellow pages for a ducting manufacturer. Give him the dimensions and he will roll the section to your conical section.

  6. You may well remember our workmanship Alan Friction Services quote name='Baldock' date='Nov 26 2008, 03:14 PM' post='302752'] If you are interested a NEW GENUINE Lister Petter cone is £221.61 rsp..however we can offer relined cones @ £85.00 obviously there would be carriage charges but still could work out a lot cheaper Our relines are ground to the stated Lister dimensions so we know they are correct for the job Chris Day Job Linky
  7. Alan, Yes this is a recognised method for a "one off bonding" approach. The clearances on the cone are quite tight and therefore setting the male and female is critical. I assume yours is a mechanical box, ie the shift is by mechanical linkage, this is the easiest since if the cone is tight an extra pressure on the shift is easily applied. On the later hydraulic shift boxes this extra pressure was not availble, hence the need to final grind the friction material to a predetermined size it situ. Alan
  8. I owned the company that lined gearbox bands and cones for Listers and relined the same for several of the larger parts suppliers. You should remember that both bands and cones run "wet" that is to say in oil and therefore any material you use MUST be a specialised "in oil" friction material. Normal woven material will not work, in fact may degrade and gum up your box completely. The material on the cones is a special woven material, nominally 3.2mm thick, but is ground after bonding (thermal setting) to a cone template. The material on the band is a paper material, imported from the US, and was 1mm thick. I do not want to sound too down, but this is not a job for the amateur. If you have problems contact me and I can point you in the right direction. Alan
  9. Darlington Wharf - Tree down proceed with caution. Friday 14 November 2008 - Monday 17 November 2008 A tree has fallen down blocking part of the navigation. Craft will be able to make passage with care. The tree will be removed on Monday afternoon. Enquiries: 01452 318000

  11. Andy I've always thought that any double ended boat was a Joey. There were a lot of iron double ended boats on the BCN, S& L mattys etc.
  12. Advised from BW Wootton Rivers Lock 51 to Crossing Lock 61 Wednesday 24 September 2008 - Thursday 25 September 2008 Due to low water levels passage will not be possible between Lock 51 Wootton Rivers and Lock 61 Crossing Lock, Crofton. It is hoped that the stoppage will be lifted on Thursday 25 September. Enquiries: 01452 318000
  13. Even a delay of a minute still returns the same
  14. Could someone explain why I now get this error message when attempting to view new posts. This has onle been occuring this last week. The error returned was: Sorry, the board administrator has enabled search flood control. Please wait at least 5 seconds before trying again.
  15. I had a similar problem with a small inverter I had purchased some time ago. My problem was that the inverter was too small for the laptop. Check the rating of the inverter and the rating of the laptop, you would be quire surprised the power required of the laptop. Remeber volts multipled by amps equals watts.
  16. Andy, We seem to be saying the same thing. I have found a map of the Bilston steelworks published in the Steel Times as a review of the whole of S & L, it does not directlty identifiy the boat dock but an unidentified square on the drawing is where \i remeber the dock. I will attempt to copy it and post it if you think it si worth it. Incedentally its last useage was as a repair workshop for the internal rail waggons.
  17. Andy The boat dock was within 100 metres of the blast furnace, I worked on site. Alan
  18. Brass and steel together will set up an electro chemical corrosion cell. Hence the need for sacrificial annodes to protect the prop. These are only effective because they are immesed in water
  19. Sorry to disagree Original Bantocks dock was in the site originally owned by British Steel Bilston works, on the BCN Ettingshall Road Bridge towards Birmingham about 800yards. BSC bought the works form Stewarts & Lloyds during nationalisation who in turn bought it from Sir Alfed Hickman who bought it from BANTOCK.
  20. Just seen the request for info on Bantock. Originator Bantock who was employed by (I think the Dike of Bridgewater) to set up iron making in Bilston Staffordshire. The ironworks was established at Springfields in Bilston (now alongside the BCN) the ironworks was subsiquently owned by Sir Alfred Hickman, then Stewarts and Lloyds then British Steel. Bantock set up a boat dock at Springfields and began manufacturing boats to transport his products. Both Hickmans and S & L continued with boat building and it is not surprising that the largest fleet of Bantocks found their way into the S & L fleet. The later traffic being between Bilston and Coombes Wood. The boat dock was still in existance up to the point at which British Steel closed Bilston works in 1980. The Bantocks were well known in the area one becoming mayor of Wolverhampton. There exists a museum in Wolverhapton in one of the previous homes of the Bantocks, the Bantock museum.
  21. Two weeks ago Saltisford charged me £12
  22. If the engine numer start 25********* it is a 2.5 the 2.2 are always prefixed 22*******. As far as a 2.2 or a 2.5 being too big for a narrowboat, well my 45 foot has been engined for thirty years with a 2.2. Spares are a little tricky but AMC can usually help
  23. Isolate the pump electrically. You ought to have a valve to isolate the water from the tank, turn off. On top of the switch is a domed nut which releases the cover. Once cover off you can see that on the base of the square D is a nut which connects to the water supply, or the accumulator if you have one. this will now release the switch. The nut reveals the water contact with the pressure snsor. In my case, and I suspect yours, you will find that the clag is accumulated here. Gently remove clag, there may be a considerable quantity. Reseal using PTFE tape. No gaskets or O rings required. Whist the switch is off you ought to check the electrical contacts , to make sure they are clean.
