  5. This happened at the first set of locks we had ever been in as first time boaters. We had family with us (also inexperienced) and they started to open up the forward paddles before I had even got the gates halfway closed. The gates were ripped out of my hands and the boat took a terrible lurch forward and at the same time it looked like a tidal wave of water came over the gates narrowly missing washing my hubs overboard. The air turned blue and hubs had to really put the point across. Whoever is steering the boat is in charge and please concentrate on him at all times, this is not a holiday boat or something that we mess about in - THIS IS OUR HOME!!!
  6. We also get this - all the bloody time!!! Thats why the contents of the average persons shed is stored on my blooming roof (sore point - currently going through intensive talks with Hubs over said condition of roof).
  7. We hang our heads in shame - for the first time since we had the boat - we got the mooring rope caught around the prop. It happened so god-dam quickly it was unreal. Luckily we were 10mins from home mooring, so limped home and dealt with said shameful event in private. Believe me it will never happen again - lesson learnt - big time!!!
  8. The shower cubicle in our old house is the same size as my bathroom now. Yes - I miss my beautiful luxury bathroom, but I would never go back because life now is fantastic!!
  9. Don't believe everything 'organic' products claim to deliver. Any land used for agricultural use has been so intensly farmed it needs some form of additional help for any crops to grow. You wouldn't be so confident in 'organic' if you knew what was used to grow the stuff. Generally speaking, farmers are really restricted as to what they can use especially on food products, but 'organic' or otherwise - there really isn't a lot of difference!
  10. I voted for 'other', because it is neither green or blue. But there again are we actually sure it's a boat!!! All I know is that it is loved by someone and thats all that matters!
  11. I saw a widebeam with a grass roof, it was being watered and cut at the time. Just looked silly if you ask me - not very practical, very time consuming. Anyway if there's grass on the roof - where are you going to put the wood, the old bike, bags of coal and the mobile shed - doh!!!
  12. Hubs has worked in a distribution depot for agricultural chemicals for the last 12 years, he hasn't turned green yet and he doesn't glow in the dark, but he agrees that farmers are idiots if they spray when there's a wind. Most farmers are really carefull, because they are dealing with the stuff directly, I must admit I see more farmers with missing limbs than I do suffering from the effects of chemicals!

  15. I got terrible eebie jeebies when we sold our house and moved onto the boat. I remember carrying our very few belongings that we had left on board the boat and thinking - God this is small, how are we going to manage. Its been nearly two years now and I wouldn't change I thing, it was hard in the beginning (moved in the winter, heating failed etc), but I just love it and could never go back because this is my life and should have done it years ago.!
  16. They wanted DD on a certain day of the month, which meant that we would incur charges (every blooming month and got in pickle). We suggested that the only way it could be done successfully was for us to set up the SS and remain in control of timings of payment (due to irregularity of income). After some discussion, some crossed wires and a little of 'if you want it paid and we want to pay it - this is the only way we can do it' - Success!!!! Smiley happy people all round I do think it depends on finding someone who will actually listen, talk to and understand what you are trying to achieve. First name terms and talk to the same person everytime!!!!
  17. We were recently told that we have to pay the total amount of BW licence fee, when we previously had agreed a standing order(and there had been some sort of admin C#ck up). When speaking to the relevant person, calmly and without ranting and raving, we got it sorted. Sometimes, calm and rational doe's actually pay off.
  18. Rules are rules and the law is the law. Unfortunately this is life and the way it is!!!! Unless we feel the need to expend energy to change the things that we don't agree with - things will just stay the way they are. My mother always used to say 'If you don't like it, do something about it or put up and/or shut up'. Sounds a little defeatist but I am quite happy settling for a quiet and simple life (thats just me). I don't pretend to know the exact circumstances of the post, but I think I understand where your coming from - Sorry mate, thats just life!! Especially, I have found, life on the water!!!!
  19. Calm down!! is there something you need to share X
  20. We work in Ramsey St. Mary and would really like to live near where we work, but at present we travel for 45 mins each way to get to work and back as we are moored at a Marina in Northamptonshire (at great cost). Bill Fen would be ideal, but he didn't like the idea of residential and CCing is not practical, due to pets and vehicles. Theres loads of ideal places to moor, but not all farmers let you especially when you need access for vehicles. What we need is some enterprising Farmer to realise the niche in the market and open up some of their land!!

  22. Let me see!!! I pay the cost of getting to the start point obviously! I pay the company to use their boat for a week! I pay for the fuel! I pay for all costs incurred while travelling! I pay to get back home! Haven't I just paid for a very expensive holiday and moved a boat from A to B. Surely they should be paying me!!!
  23. we did buy one, it was fine until the first lot of bad weather and then all the attachments to the dish etc snapped. Still using the box, but were given an old sky dish which is a bit more substantial (still no sky, just freeview).
