  1. I dont get my fuel from beside the canal?! (got 4000 litres for free!)
  2. Like I said in my comment about a case that appeared (I think) in towpath talk where it was decided that living on a boat had nothing to do with the planning dept?!
  3. Just for interest how long can I spend on my boat before I am classed as living on it? I know people who spend 6 days a week in the same hotel for work, does that mean they are living in the hotel? A friend of mine has a caravan at the coast which he is not allowed to visit for two weeks of the year, he can spend as much time as he likes the rest of the year their without it being classed as residential! Maybe a little of topic but perhaps food for thought. When BW tell you that a mooring is/is not residential it is all open to interpretation. I cant see a problem with living on a boat where ever you have it moored, whats the difference?
  4. Hmmm there would be nosy do gooders up and down the country queing up for that! BW dont neeed a licence to be displayed to know whether you have one or not they just need to look on the computer. I dont dipslay mine (keeps getting damp in the window)
  5. yes but is 'goes live' the correct way to talk of the start of a 'trial period' a test if you like? It is interesting to note that (unofficially) there is a great deal of opposition to this within the ranks of BW itself. It would appear that only those in high office are truly behind it!
  6. Wasnt there a recent case where a load of liveaboard boaters somewhere on the system faced eviction because the locals didnt like the boats spoiling their view? When it came to it was decided that living aboard their boats had nothing to do with planning permission? It may have been in towpath talk a few months back
  7. so in effect BW are trying to maintanin an artificially high price rather than allowing true market froces to set it? private investors should not be given sweetners they should profit or die just like in thye real business world!! Gary
  8. A depth souder would be handy where I am - on the tidal trent Gary
  9. Might be worth considering BW's current 'policies' regarding moorings/mooring fee's etc before you commit yourself.
  10. Why are BW doing this to linear moorings? Why is there a policy to close linears when new marinas open? Surely in this age of mooring shortages we need all the moorings we can get. Not everyone wants to moor in a boat park!
  11. I think the NRV is screwed into the injector pump if that is what it looks like (1/2 inch of hew bar) thanks for the info GAry
  12. Thanks Tony thats as I thought it should be (and as it was on my narrowboat fitted with a BMC engine). The fuel pump for info has all the injector pipes exiting it vertically arranged in a circle if that makes sense. They certainly do not exit the pump 'inline'. So sounds like the DPA? Is the NRV a necessary item? regards Gary
  13. Tony, The CAV injector pump on my perkins 6354 has a fuel inlet which is fed from the filter which is in turn fed from the LP pump. The injector pump also has a 'return' which goes back to the fuel filter but no further. So in effect their are 3 pipes going to the filter. The spill rail has its own return to the tank. Should there be a forth pipe coming off the top of the filter assembly 'banjo style' which goes back to the tank?
  14. We had a couple from work (one man one woman team) who rowed a very small boat accross the atlantic, bit of a race that happens quite often actually. When they did it there were I believe about 20 boats entered!
  15. I've always found that putting the tiller to the left tends to move the bow to the right and vise versa. Anyone else out there that has noticed this phenomenon? Yes but it also makes your stern go to the left, not something there is always room to do.
  16. Are these toilets for no.1's and no.2's? A lot of the info on the web regarding constructing your own composting toilet gives the impression that keeping the ' liquid' discharges separate is the key to a home built toilets success!? Gary
  17. A bow thruster makes a boat more manoverable not less. It introduces another point of control increasing the precision with which it can be piloted. A narrowboat with just an engine steers aboat 1/3 to 1/2 from the stern so to move the bow to the left you have two move the stern to the right and vice versa. With a bow thruster the bow and the stern can be manovered independantly without having to resort to rope work, poles and the inherent danger sometimes involved with these antics. The days when it was acceptable to collide with other boats have long gone. I have seen so may bowthrusterless boats slam into the side of west stockwith lock and go careering out of control across the basin in strong winds. Sure some of this could have been avoided with forthought and planning but we are all just human and dont get it right 100% of the time, a bowthruster helps to correct inadvertant mistakes. and what is it with all this patronising talk about people with bow thrusters not being able to handle a boat correctly If theres one thing I have noticed about the boating world is that everyboady is an expert,or so they think. Oh I am a proper boater cos I havnt got a thruster ....get a grip.

  19. 'I also doubt the positive advantage of building in voltage drop and would be curious what an RCD surveyor would say when viewing a schematic containing undersized cables. I reckon he would find the idea that its for bulb life reasons to be quite comical, he may even consider it as a fire risk' You can 'downrate' cables to increase voltdrop and still be well within the current rating of the chosen cable. Infringing the latter is what would cause fires etc. Surely all boat exiaminers are interested in is that the aplliance current demands do not exceed the current ratings of the cable? Gary
  20. As a matter of principle (and good sense) we need to avoid this 'new' company?! Or cancel a lot of hefty orders! Gary
  21. Where abouts in Lincoln way are you Malc, we come down that way quite often Gary
  22. there is a lot of talk of using algae to produce bio diesel and putting the farms in the desert thus getting round the issue of deforestation and/or using large quantities of exisiting farm land. http://www.unh.edu/p2/biodiesel/article_alge.html
  23. The same situation can arise if your bonding is all on the boat side as per normal practice? Hence what you suggest will work and is no more dangerous. ?
  24. I'd much rather invest a bit of time and effort in learning how to do things "properly". get a horse instead of an engine then.
