  1. Vested Interest Narrowcraft at Grendon Dock 01827 898585
  2. I was asked on my recent trip why I have not been blogging on my way. I admit it is bit of a trial with a loaded boat, back cabin, bolinder and summer traffic! However if there is interest I shall write it up this week. We took the Jag loaded at Alvecote to Watford with railway line ballast for NB Roger. We did find the time to go to Shakerstone and actually met up with Kangaroo and Australia at Marston Lane Junction. Lawrence, Matthew and Caz had left Beale Park with 32 tons of coal for the marina on Monday afternoon with the coverted Richie trophy. We slugged to the Lime Kilns and onto Shakerstone for Saturday early afternoon. The steam train ride in the evening was exciting although not quite as good as the time we delivered to the Nene Valley Railway in 1993 when we had 3 pairs that followed through to load at Wisbech with timber for Kings Langley. I have non been idle during the summer and did take the Jag to London early in the year which was chronicled by Mike Askins on youtube. I have it listed in my favorites on youtube if anybody is interested (Joshering About) . The trip South also involved the usual South Midland boat logistics as well as meeting the pair returning from London I needed to be back at the stop on Sunday Night to meet Emu which was on its maiden trip with a settling in Bolinder that Michael was coming to terms with. Let me know if there is interest
  3. Always be wary of short people !!
  4. I think I remember tying up there on the way back from Huddersfield with Antartic left the boat for a week and no probs. Antartic could do with some paint now, but it is on the list !
  5. Please tell me more as the boy's 'phone are out of power and they are loading at Kidlington in the morning !
  6. I have just received this e-mail from waterways I am lost for words ! [/b]Coventry Canal Wednesday 1 September 2010 - Tuesday 7 September 2010 Due to the Shackerstone Festival taking place on 4 & 5 September there is likely to be significant boat traffice using the canal and the Atherstone Lock Flight. Please proceed with caution. British Waterways apologises for any inconvenience this may cause. Enquiries: 01827 252000 01827 252000 during office hours[/b] Especially with the proceed with caution !!
  7. Narrowcraft only want 10% initial payment for a fully fitted boat ! Balance on Delivery
  8. Well not sure I live in the same town after reading this !!!
  9. Greyhound has arrived at Alvecote and is being craned this afternoon (Saturday) Launching will be on my youtube later today
  10. Tha'ts the one been around for many years but facts are the same. The 12 plus 3 is arrived at because it has been certified I would suspect as with the 50 plus 3 !
  11. Its the same certificate that are on ALL the trip boats on the canal that carry over 12 persons. You will note when you next look at one that they have a 'plimsoll line' clearly matked on the hull sides. This is part of the certification as is yearly dockings and inspections. The Board of Trade Licence !
  12. With regards to the twin cylinders . That is 2 x 15 (20) hps with a common crankshaft as in the picture posted above. I can recall John Hemlyrick telling me about the Sabeys tug that used to tow a train of barges from Paddington to Slough Arm with domestic rubbish. The tug had a 2 cylinder Bolinder and with the engine 'ole doors open He said the front cylingder would cool off which made the rear cylinder work harder and overheat to compensate. Said it was the worst engine he had ever encountered and he was forever in the engine 'ole varying the cooling water between the cylinders.
  13. Board of Trade It is against the Law of the Land to have more that 12 'souls' on a water borne vessel that has not been certified as fit for the purpose. This applies equally to Inland Waters as to Coastal Waters. Apparently it is okay to loose 12 'souls' but not 13 ! AND I could not believe it either when I was made aware of it in the 80's
  14. A very healthy pursiut for children out in the fresh air using their wits ! The steerer can see perfectly well what is in front and I am sure was in control of the situation. My kids spent the 80's doing this, as did many of the 20 to 40 year olds on the cut now, also did ! I am assuming that the steerer is both a competent steerer and compentent parent/guardian which of course goes without saying
  15. 6 days wow what a bonus ! You will be able to spend 2 days at the Samuel Barlow sampling new chefs homemade delights ! PS vested interest
  16. Please elaborate ! You say 'our' boat so i assume you where not single handed. One person on the boat one on the bank. I have bought pairs up and down there on my own and have only got off the boats when they are in the lock. Especially this time of year it's not a problem if you stay one lock behind the boats in front. You should get a 'free' ride through the locks.
  17. A bit bored of jumping inm and out of Emu's engine 'ole at the moment so took time out. If you really want a challange I have a twin cylinder monoblock semi diesel eBolinder complete with gearbox. Got it firing in the yard about 10 years ago with Matts on the lamp and Drew on the pin. I am planning to put it in Antartic as a lot lighter then the 9 hp currently in situ. But I think it's way down the list at the moment. PS Emu is back to life ! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ww1JhgM48vw
  18. I vowed not to answer but what a load of rubbish you talk!! Jaguar at full chat YES Did you notice it was pulling a butty out of the lock ? Did you notice that the counter was 3 inches out of the water ? Did you notice the turbulance from the blade due to this ? Did you notice then engine note slow down when the prop finally bit !! GET A LIFE or better still a proper boat.
  19. These engines were originally know as ' Crude Oil Engines ' As it states on the Bolinder engine plaques. I have a few cylinder heads with a glow plug that were used in the sixyies but every one is cracked. I woiuld suspect because with the glow plug it did not warm all the head sufficiently and the shock of the first ignition must have cracked the heads. They are now correctly refered to as Hot Bulb Semi Diesel Engines. The boatman did call the first 'full' diesel Bolinders the 'Cold Start Bolinder'
  20. I've got a 9 hp Bolinder waiting for a 'proper' home if you are going to do right by the boat !
  21. This boat belongs to The Ex Chief Executive David Fletcher
  22. Sad but 1963 British Grand Prix at Silverstone was my first real experience of watching the Master with the Blue Helmet with a White Peak. The Drivers drove in most of the races (as Horse Jockeys now do) and He drove a Ltus Cortina in the Saloon Cars and a Lotus Sports Car. But having had got over the 'sad' season and now back in circulation I shall answer the original thread and take a bow. I am at the moment re=building an E type for Linda which would be a 1912 based engine but I have a few 1926ish BM's running in the fleet.
  23. We have a client with a boat at Ellesmere Yard that needs towing to the Main Line where our tug can pick it up. Usual Towage Rates Paid. You could even bring it back to Alvecote if you so wish. Please call me on 07831 369930
