You probably need slightly more solar for an effective solar dump.....you would get some heating from it but it might not be worth the faff with 800w. People with solar dumps usually have well over a kilowatt of solar. Yes you can go down the valve route to isolate the engine/heater. Although you do hear of webasto's on a single coil system without valves, it could be a real pain to retrofit. You'd loose a bit of heat to the engine with this setup and it could be problematic with pressurised engine cooling systems.

The standard setup these days is to have twin coil cauliflower, with one coil heated by the engine and the other by a Webasto/Ebbersplutter (along with radiators), as well as an immersion heater. How much solar do you have? You need quite a lot to consider a solar dump, and it will only produce significant amounts of hot water for half the year anyway.

Radio 4 is the most listened to radio station of consequence in the UK. Radio 2 has more listeners, but it's just bubble gum for the ears.

My last boat had a remote control.....It was called the centre line 😅

I’m sure it would make an ideal generator set engine. But I actually thought it was a generator engine as I initially misread Gleniffer as Genniffer. Genniffer (or more correctly Jennifer) is a term used commonly on here to refer to generators!

I totally agree, and it's good of @hilaleigh432 to come back and update the thread.

I’m sure that’s what my dad used to do back in the day.

I thought this thread was about a generator engine! Seriously, that’s a lovely engine. TVO brings back memories of my dad and his TVO Ferguson tractor.

Well this update from the OP just makes the whole situation even more of a mystery. I too read it that it had been sold to an innocent party by the thief. But the fact that this buyer then cycled off probably means this story is concocted by the thief to give himself getaway time. But who knows.

The relatively recent and less severe Middlewich breach cost £3m so I imagine north of £5m is a reasonable estimate for this.
-
As it's under 5m, portable and less that 4hp (2pp to be precise!) it qualifies for the 50% portable powered boat discount, so £366.25 for the year! I did watch it go through a lock, they both got off and very easily bow hauled it in and out so no dramas. It's beam was narrow enough that they could leave the fenders down even in a narrow lock.

I seen this boat a few years ago when I was on the Llangollen, it was attracting a lot of attention! At less than £3k I'm actually tempted but I did notice at the time that it was very tender, possibly the only boat that could get you seasick on a canal. It also begs the question, what happened to Newt I and II 😅

Quite simple to add more, especially on a widebeam where there is plenty of roof space. However this boat has 1200w of solar which is a lot, so adding more wouldn't be of much benefit and with this much solar this boat is about as 'off grid' as you can get. They are mounted on the storage boxes to make good use of the space on the roof. A practice commonly seen on narrowboats, although on a wide beam you could mount the solar to the roof and still have plenty of space for the storage boxes.

From the advert the boat looks like a reasonably good prospect and the price seems ok....slightly on the high side but in the right ball park at least. Modern beta engine which is good but no mention of engine hours or gearbox type which would be good to know. Also no mention of when it was last blacked so I'd personally want to have a hull survey as it's 23 years old. You can use this as a bargaining point if you get to the stage of putting in an offer.

We've all been there, but jumping on your boat and taking the helm unless asked is overstepping the mark IMO. I usually leave people to it in these situations. If it's really windy I might ask if they would like me to take the bow or stern rope to help.

Some people are unbelievable......I'm sure you must have been tempted to tell her to go forth and multiply.

I find this technique works well too.

I've experimented with lots of different smokeless coals in the stove at home and they all smoke to a degree until fully lit. Dampness seems to only have a small effect as I've burnt smokeless coal that has been in a bunker all summer and dry as a bone....it still smokes when first lit. In my experience smokeless coals with high petrocoke content tend to be more smokey until fully lit and I think Oxbow excel falls into this category.

I did it once in September and had exactly the same experience. 2 hrs to get up Grindley and at New Marton locks there was a queue of 10 boats waiting to go up. By far the busiest I've experienced...I'd recommend August, it was much quieter.

A question this forum was actually designed for

Max beam on the K&A is 13' 6" so you should be OK in that department...it's a wide canal.
