  1. Saw this at the start of the post: 'Emily, on 05 Feb 2015 - 11:34 PM, said: On 2/5/2015 at 22:34, Emily said: Cheers everybody! It's really misty here today and I haven't had time to sand any antlers and, despite contriving excuses to prod people in the face, I sadly seem to have lost my electrical charge. Thank you all for your help' And yes it is old age, I didn't have my glasses on
  2. Ah, didn't look that far back. Article showed it as posted this year
  3. Afternoon all, Found this article posted on another forum. Couldn't find it on here, it's basically about the downside of overplating Would be interesting to get the view of others especially those who repair boats Apologies if it's been posted here before https://www.iims.org.uk/the-dangers-of-overplating/
  4. Would agree with Mr de Enfield. Having said that I used a surveyor as my knowledge of structural matters was limited. I would say at the very least take someone with a good working knowledge At least you're being realistic in realising that there will more than likely be some depreciation. Good luck
  5. Ronnie, I've got Chrisy's contact details if you need them
  6. Here's my pride and joy If you're on the Union or Forth&Clyde say hello and maybe give it (and the ugly git on the right steering it) a wide berth for the next couple of months
  7. OK, apologies for what will probably be a daft newbie question My boat engine is cooled by a water jacket around the stern which has what looks like an expansion tank. Can I increase/check anti-freeze levels or would I be better to drain it. I do plan to use it over the winter, I've got electric hook up and the seller left me with a couple of oil filled radiators for the cabins, I was planning to drain down the water tank after each use
  8. Well at least I didn't mention composting toilets
  9. How about offering it out as a 6 month rental while you're back home. If you had reasonable rental terms it means the boat is in use and might cover some of your costs as well
  10. Would also suggest if you sail solo source a jacket with an 'auto light'. You may go into the water in daylight but it might not be daylight if someone has to search for you. Also attach a whistle if it hasn't already got one. If you're in tidal waters you could cover ground quite quickly
  11. Cheers Haggis, When I eventually find a boat I shall ask SC and see what they say
  12. How long are you allowed to stay on SC moorings other than your own home mooring
  13. Thanks for that, Haggis was that your 'Gamebird' we saw at The Kelpies yesterday. Any idea of boats for sale at Auchinstarry?
  14. A few more (probably of many) questions Are all SC locks staff operated or are some user operated (are there always staff on hand, didn't see anybody obvious on locks 1-16 from the Helix yesterday) Roughly how long does it take to get from the Helix to beyond Camelon through the locks, skippers guide says 6 hours-is that about right Reading other posts there seem to areas that need to be 'booked in advance' to travel . How much of the system needs to have advanced notice given I've read mention of narrowboats for sale at Auchinstarry, does anyone know if they are still there
  15. Are the Scottish Canals moorings the only moorings available on the Forth&Clyde or Union or does anywhere else offer leisure moorings
  16. Ronnie, I'm planning to do the same thing in the next couple of months If there's any advice or favoured companies it would be appreciated. We are looking at a mooring at the Helix as its closest to us. Anybody had any experience good or bad there
  17. Cheers Haggis, Would plan to get a leisure mooring as I would be down to the boat on days off Are there any places where a widebeam/barge would be a problem.(That said trying to find any boats for sale up here doesn't seem easy) Oh, and apologies for the 'Grand' :-)
  18. I'm about to start looking for my first Canal Boat and plan to use it on the Forth&Clyde and Grand Union Canals I'd be grateful for any advice from any members that use these canals and in particular: What is the best type of boat for that system-traditional narrowboat or wider boat Can you moor along the canal or are you restricted to official pontoons (like the Caledonian Canal) Scottish Waterways website states leisure moorings are available but are they easy enough to come by I'll apologies in advance for this and the many other newbie questions that will follow. This is the beginning of a long term plan so I'm trying to get things right. Any help appreciated
  19. Hello, I'm in the process of making plans to live on the water long term (hence why I've joined this forum) I have a question (apologies if it's already been dealt with, couldn't find anything): When buying a boat privately what safeguards/procedures are there to ensure you're not buying a stolen boat or one with outstanding finance on it. Is there anything like a central register or a website like you have for vehicles All help appreciated. Thanks, Paul
