I think the wording on the orange flash may be causing a little bit of confusion if you can't see the tab on the top, perhaps "Please help us stay ad free! Click here to learn how to donate to Canal World today" ?? And also make the actual link in your post bigger and bolder ??

    Just a thought :)

    Thanks for the feedback.

It is difficult with the orange banner, if it's too wordy it won't display properly on some smaller devices. I have actioned your second suggestion though and have made the text bigger + added another link.

  2. Thanks for the donations received thus far. Every penny we receive (minus PayPal transaction fees) is re-invested in the forum and covers our monthly running costs.

We're just over half way towards reaching our goal for this donation campaign. I'm sure Nigel will share this in his next financial report. Keep the donations coming. :)

    Thanks again

  3. We have updated the forum software to the latest version of Invision to apply various software bug & security fixes. This is not a major update although some minor differences may be noticed. However, the overall look, feel and functionality of the site remains unchanged. Should you encounter any oddities, please first clear your browser cache and if the issue remains, do let us know.

    Thank you

I had an account using the name karanight and this forum will not let me sign in.  I put the correct password in and I was told it was wrong, so I clicked to change it and an email was supposed to be sent to me but it never arrived. My email is REDACTED
I've had to register again with a different name and email address.  Do you think you could sort this out for me please

  5. Good afternoon,

As you may know, Canal World is funded entirely by our loyal members. However due to recent increases in operating costs, current donations are not meeting our full running costs each month. (To read more about our finances, please see Nigel's post here.)

Our operating costs consist mainly of the techy stuff. - Canal World is hosted on two powerful servers, one of which is dedicated to hosting VNC as to help us provide a fast & stable service while enabling us to achieve this while being 100% ad-free!

The downside is that unfortunately this comes at a cost and this is dependent on how much we use, a bit like our energy bills. As such, we would greatly appreciate any additional donations from our valued members.

To make a donation via PayPal, you may click the "Donate" button at the top right of the page, or click here. All donations received are invested in the site and will help us keep our much loved site and community online & stable for years to come. As a small token of our appreciation to those who donate to Canal World, we will display a small star next to their forum name.

Please click here to donate today!

    Thank you

  6. They have been demonised when they could be regulated in such a way to enable society to benefit from them while mitigating any negative impact they may have. Typically they're inconspicuous, capable of excessive speeds and often used by individuals who lack training or awareness/adherence of the the highway code.

If they were properly regulated and limited to ~10 mph they would be much less of a risk. The government could go further and perhaps enforce annual safety checks, a £15-£20 road fund licence, a requirement for proper lighting/reflectors and perhaps even some sort of compulsory training for e-scooter users. - Much like we have for conventional motor scooters. (CBT) Perhaps some of these ideas would not be feasible or practical, but simply banning their use on the grounds of some archaic legislation without considering their potential benefits in modern society is a real shame imo.

  7. I visited Sapperton tunnel over the weekend as I've not visited it for about 5 years. It was interesting to see how much it had deteriorated over such relatively short period. Both entrances were somewhat overgrown with vegetation. The Tunnel Inn near the Coates portal is now closed after the management failed to come to an agreement with the landlord, a real shame.

I did some research and noticed that there used to be a house adjacent to the tunnel on the Daneway Portal. The house is no longer there although part of the stone wall remains. Does anyone know the history behind the house, what happened to it?

You wait for a green, end of, or else you will get shouted at.  I waited for a green with the bow of the boat past the light and I got a right telling off!

The two (smaller ones) that you can pass under in a NB, you still wait for a green, or for the keeper to wave you through.

Yes and if it's windy and your bow protrudes slightly beyond the traffic light, you still get shouted at. They expect you to stop on a dime & wait and as mentioned, if you're too far away they will pretend they can't see you and do nothing. Very frustrating as often you can't win, but still a nice canal. Some bridge keepers are (or were) much more friendly and will phone ahead to other bridge keepers but they were exceptions.

edit: Forgot to mention also the wind can be a real PITA on this ship canal as it's much wider (I think around 70-100ft wide give or take) and exposed to the elements.

For a number of years I moored alongside the support boat for the series. The owner ran the support side of things. Some of the stories he told were quite entertaining. Surprisingly the above clip is the first time I've ever seen an episode.

I remember passing Ragdoll as a child back in the 1990s while on a narrowboat holiday. I wonder where Ragdoll is now?

  10. I don't know exactly why this happens. They are not technically duplicates as the posts in question are from two different users, albeit posted at the same time. I suspect this has something to do with the glitch. I have raised this to Invision to see what they say. I am reluctant to poke about too much with Elastic Search because it's temperamental and I don't want to break VNC, people get very upset when that happens...

  11. We had a 55ft Liverpool semi-trad, built in 2001. I kept her regularly maintained but would rarely go all out and would use standard bitumastic blacking etc. Despite this, she had a hull survey just before I sold her which suggested the condition of the hull to be very good. I had no problems with the hull in the 5 years I had owned her.

She was berthed next to a 2005 60ft Aqualine and I'd often compare the two while they were side by side while sat at the stern with a cider or two. The difference in terms of build quality was immense. The Aqualine was a work of art in comparison, with thicker steel plating and better quality welding joins etc. Would I get another Liverpool boat? Probably not, but I have no regrets about the one I had.

For me it's like comparing Kettle chips crisps with Walkers. Both are good but ultimately you still get what you pay for.

I'm viewing the site on a mobile and suddenly the format of pages has changed slightly this morning compared to how it was yesterday.

Most notably on my account page I can't sign out of the site as the 'current achievement rating' window is overlapping the personal sign in menu, so the 'sign Out' line cannot be seen. Is there any way we can have an option to turn off the 'current achievement rating'?

I tried to replicate this issue but the sign out link appears on my old Samsung S21

What mobile device are you using? Is it possible to attach a screenshot? Will take another look

  13. We will be updating Canal World to the latest version of Invision tomorrow evening as advised by the developers. Canal World will be down during this time. This is a minor update in that the overall look and feel will remain the same but there may be some minor differences. I will confirm on completion.

We expect this to take place at around 22:00 on Sunday 25th June and should not take more than 2 hours.

    Apologies for the short notice.

    Thank you

New members who have fewer than 10 posts and/or have been registered less than 7 days do have some profile limitations among others. Unfortunately in recent months we have been hit by spam attacks and quite often spammers would update their profile promoting their interests.

In this case though it's obvious you are not a spammer so I have manually removed the limitation on your forum account. Apologies for any inconvenience.

    Hi Jimbo,

I just happened onto this post, I’m the current owner of Emma Louise Too.

We’ve found the layout of this Dutch style narrowboat such a pleasure to live on. We’re both 6’2 in height and have plenty of headroom in all areas of the boat, with the exception of the rear guest room.

We’ve cruised the network relatively well over 12 months of ownership, and only very rarely need to drop the wheel house for clearance (takes 10 minutes to drop and store the panels)…more do for pleasure on a sunny day. I think the most I did drop it for was in the first week of ownership…whilst getting used to her.

Steering does handle different from a tiller, but once used to a wheel, she handles accurately and very smoothly.

I feel that the wheel house adds so much to the living and cruising experience. It can be hammering with rain whilst I cruise, I’m very appreciative of the warm dry driving conditions whilst enjoying a coffee….perhaps to the envy of fellow boaters!

Hope you’re well, and my post gives an insight to the Dutch style narrowboat.

Please feel free to follow us on Instagram #emmalouisetoo

Many thanks for sharing your experience :)

  17. Thanks all and special thanks to everyone who has come forward and also to those who have provided feedback & suggestions. Much appreciated,

Just a quick reminder; the closing date for applications is Sunday 9th April, 2023 as to give everyone an opportunity to apply should they wish. Everyone will receive a reply by PM and successful applicants will be contacted again shortly after the closing date.

If you haven't applied and wish to do so, feel free to come forward and drop me a PM. Don't worry, we're not expecting an essay or any kind of formal application - just a short paragraph outlining your interest in the role and anything you feel that may be relevant.

Thanks again and wishing everyone a great Easter weekend. :)

    Cheers

    I just received this

    Hello,
Knowing what boaters think about the Canal & River Trust is very important to us, and we would therefore ask you to take part in our latest Survey by clicking on the following link:

    {Take Part}

Your participation is much appreciated, however, if you do not wish to take part in this survey please click on the following link:

    {Opt Out}

    Kind regards

    Janet

    Janet.Johnson@canalrivertrust.org.uk

Without seeing the message headers, hard to say with 100% certainty but I checked the link and although it doesn't look very professional, it does appear to be genuine.

It would take a fair amount of development time & resource to create a custom survey. Using one of the free or paid for ones like Survey Monkey or Snap Surveys enables them to put out a survey in very little time at little cost, ideal for an organisation such as the CRT
