  1. I'll take your word for it. Mind you, I took the word of the bloke what told me otherwise too. Anything for a quiet life, me.
  2. That makes more sense but I think the kilometre length thing is being taken wrongly. As far as I understand it, the position of a boat is taken to the nearest kilometre, the towpath isn't divided up into kilometre sections. There are parts where the canal takes a big loop, you can move a couple of miles along the canal but still find yourself within a kilometre of your previous position.
  3. Over the years, probably thousands of kiloamp voltage watts per hour/hour.
  4. That's brilliant. 3.1 You must cruise your boat unless it's moored. P.S. ignore that if your boat is not on the Waterways. Will have to assume that "cruising" does not mean travelling slowly along the canal in the hope of soliciting some casual sex. Mind you, it does put the mockers on, towing water-skiers, doing donuts in a winding hole for a laugh, entering a tug-of-war at an Historic-boat rally, and helping out a fellow boater by towing him off a sandbank.
  5. I can see what you're getting at, but it makes no sense in practise. "each location" surely means every bit of towpath where it's possible to moor a boat. That's getting on for 2000miles.
  6. I must admit, I don't keep up with the rules on boats with Home Moorings, but I thought there were just 3 relevant ones; 1. The boat never has to leave Home mooring. 2. The boat never has to be at the Home mooring. 3. The boat mustn't stay on the same spot (other than it's Home mooring) for more than 14days in a row. Are there more?
  7. Well, I hear of half a dozen or so, but I can't see any relevance in your question. How many does it actually happen to would be more relevant. If just one boater loses their licence due to poor management of a badly thought out system, then that is too many.
  8. I much prefer to have a very bright light or two when I'm going through a tunnel. If someone coming the other way gets blinded by my lights, then they're not going backwards fast enough.
  9. But are CRT interested in logging the 20,000 or so with Home Moorings? As far as I know, it's only the 5000 or so boats that CC, that this overstay thing is relevant to. Also, your boat is much more likely to get logged in popular areas than in remote ones which is what would appear to have happened in dmr's case. If his boat was logged twice in Stone, 3 weeks apart, with no other recorded sightings between, why would CRT think the boat had overstayed in Stone rather than been elsewhere? Especially as there are lots of possible "elsewheres" within a week or twos cruise of Stone. Also also, this forum represents only a very small portion of canal users, so the few odd ones on the forum are only going to be a small percentage of the true number.
  10. I thought it meant Completely Bloomin' Akward
  11. You could say exactly the same thing for any number of topics on here. This is a discussion forum, he likes to discuss it. Not at all sure that he is after a definitive answer. I have no idea why you shouldn't care, why don't you enlighten?
  12. Can't see how that would help. The problem is more to do with how CRT collate the information that they have got, especially across regional boundaries.
  13. No. Accidents happen to canoeists. The usual accident is that they fall in. Then they get out again. It's no big deal.
  14. If he thinks it so unfair, why can't he discuss it on an internet forum? Why should he have to do something drastic, which could potentially necessitate deep pockets? Why do you even care?
  15. As an outsider, who just happens to be reading this; no I don't think he is suggesting that. I think you're just trying to use derailing tactics by extending Higg's argument sideways to suit your own argument. I would add that I don't see as unreasonable, that the marina requires you to have a CRT licence. I just don't like bad argument.
  16. Ah Graham, you forgot to highlight some important words in Tony's post, "but if they choose not to so do". Include those words & the context changes & I believe, your accusation becomes nonsense.
  17. All of this is well & good, but at what point should an ordinary, everyday, leisure boater, recognise that the boat coming the other way is a loaded working-boat? Or that it's deep-draughted & therefore needs more space? The more you cruise, the more you notice, but if you just cruise now & then, how are you supposed to recognise historic craft?
  18. Ah there you go then, pretty much as I thought. Crows half the weight of kites & big buzzards. Crows can fly faster, climb faster and change direction faster. Kites are definitely agile compared to buzzards. Can't say I've ever seen Herring gulls mobbing buzzards or kites, black-headed gulls & common gulls perhaps, but again they're smaller. Herring gull is a large gull. Down here in Bath, you don't see buzzards or kites, it's all gulls. As you head east over Wiltshire, you see more buzzards, then Kites as you near Berkshire. Buzzards & kites seem to co-exist happily enough whenever I've seen them together. Even sharing the same thermal sometimes. Can't imagine a buzzard taking a pigeon, pigeon is far too fast. Peregrine falcon is the bird for that. I've seen Blue tits mobbing magpies. Fiesty little beggars, but no match for a sparrowhawk.
  19. Buzzards & Kites are heavier and less agile than gulls or crows. It's a bit like bombers vs fighters. The bigger bird dodges and weaves but can't afford to take a hit from the smaller birds.
  20. No need to be coy. What goes under mine is a chap who's eyes are shielded from the glare of the sun & sky, and who's head is protected from sunburn. It doesn't alter my attitude or helmsmanship. Of course I would never wear it in the rain. I have a pink cowboy hat for that.
  21. I'm sure that old Springers are fine, it's just that people pay far too much for them. £25k is ridiculous. Less than £10k is more realistic. Also, buying a boat is not a capital investment, it's just money spent.
  22. Don't want to be a goody-goody, but if the logs are stacked on someone's land, it's not really foraging is it?
  23. What's wrong with Captain's hats then? Keep the glare out of your eyes, and the sun off your spam. Very useful boating hat. (Adjustable hat-band too)
  24. Learning to live with them is a lot easier than trying to get rid of them.
  25. You could be missing a trick there chap. There's money to be had if you know how to put a proposal together.
