Sad to see a respected company with a full order book having to close its doors, but going out on a high with integrity intact is something to be proud of.
As others have said the options are limited.
Droylsden Marina (for a fee)
Portland Basin Marina (for a fee)

It is indeed correct that Duchess was John Heap's boat. I have distant memories of a sociable night on her at the National Rally of Boats, Birmingham in 1969. Not sure who the builder was though, but in 1969 the boat was not very old and by canal boat standards at the time was quite luxurious.
Someone has already mentioned Pomona lock and I'm sure they maintain a few 'small' ones on the ship canal :-)
The grant was engineered by and awarded to Salford City Council for works within their boundaries, Castlefield is in Manchester.

I would say that the benefits were to other casual users of towpaths in that applying for a permit also made the cyclist aware of the do's and don'ts of cycling on a shared facility.
What I cannot understand is the current lack of licensing for cyclists on canal towpaths. I remember in the days of BWB cyclists had to have a permit to cycle on towpaths (I still have one!) but since the formation of CRT this seems to have been destined into history.
