Stopping the engine was easy - I found out years ago where the engine stop lever is, and yes it's a Beta. Looks like I'll have to do some investigative work. Thanks. Possibly. It's a Beta 38. I'm going to have to trace the fault but I'm happy that it's not the control panel at fault.

Yes, one of the wires to the stop solenoid was disconnected, which is reconnected now, but it doesn't explain why there is no power to the ignition system. I have checked all the wires on the control panel and they are all connected, so perhaps my problem is not with the control panel but elsewhere.

Interesting. In the 8 years I've had the boat I've not heard a buzzer. Which makes me think it might well have been disconnected all this time, and confirms my suspicion that it is not the source of my current woes.

Does anyone know what this thing is, and what it does? It was attached to the back of the control panel. One of the wires came loose, and I couldn't stop the engine so i assumed it was something to do with the stop button. Then after stopping the engine, the whole thing came off and now there is no power to the ignition at all. it looks too flimsy to have broken the flow of power, but I can't see any other reason for the circuit to suddenly be interrupted. I've looked on the internet, but no joy there. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I'm resurrecting this topic because I also have a problem with my Vanette GG7000. I seem to have a similar problem with my oven as froggy, in that I can't alter the temperature of the oven. What's more, I can't turn it on or off by the knob. I have to interrupt the flow by using the stopcock. Thankfully, I have 2 supply lines: one to the stove top which can remain permanently open as all knobs work as they should; but whereas the grill works fine, turning the supply on opens up the gas in the oven, so to make toast, I have to make sure I light the oven as well. A bit of a waste of gas if I have nothing else to cook. When I'm finished, I have to close the stop cock to extinguish the oven. I don't understand what a thermocouple is, but I think the problem is with the bit of wizardry immediately behind the oven knob, which I assume is the thermostat. Has anyone experience problems like this before? Can anyone confirm what I'm thinking? It seems Vanette are out of business, and the oven must be nearly 20 years old, so gGiven the cost of a new thermostat, I'm tempted just to buy a new oven.

Thanks got that. Up the locks at 10am and 3pm, down at 8am and 1pm. I can manage that. I'm assuming it's up to Skipton and down to Leeds. I hope I haven't got that wrong. Thanks again.

Afternoon all. I'm setting off this weekend from Ripon en route to Skipton (and back) for my summer hols. I understand Beal lock has now been cleared, but are there any other gotchas out there that I should be aware of? This will be my first trip west of Lemonroyd, so I'm not familiar with the territory beyond there. Is there plenty of mooring in Leeds and Skipton? I clearly need to do some research on my trip before I leave, but I've asked the same question on FB (Narrowboat Owners Group) and I thought it might be wise to ask you good people for information too. Thanks in advance.

Sorry, I'm confused. By my calculations, Sprotborough to Sheffield is about 11 hours. What time rerstrictions are you referring to? Is that for the Tinsley flight?

I've single handed a few times between Ripon and York. The section from Boroughbridge to York is long and extremely tedious, save perhaps for the excitement of an argument with the marina owner at Linton, and a pint of Black Sheep in the Dawnay Arms at Newton. But 6 hours of high river banks and nothing to see and no-one to talk to, with only the occasional passer-by is quite boring.

I'm just starting to research a boat trip from Ripon to Sheffield and back at the end of August. I haven't had a long run out for a couple of years and I need one. So a mate and I have decided to abandon the women for a fortnight and head for Sheffield, where my mate went to Uni (he won't recognize the place after all these years!). Anyway, I'm happy enough with the route from Ripon to Dole Bank lock, having done that a few times. but I have always turned right previously at Dole Bank, and this time I'll be turning left. I've planned longish days - 6hrs or thereabouts - so that we can spend a couple of days in Sheffield, and I've got my mind on overnight stays in Selby, around Sykehouse Junction (or somewhere near), Doncaster and Rotherham before hitting Sheffield. I'm looking for any advice, tips, recommendations etc for the journey from Dole Bank into Sheffield, such as good moorings, good pubs, places to avoid. Particularly, I'd be interested in what people consider to be the best places to moor around Doncaster and Rotherham. I'm not familiar with either town and would quite like to explore, so if you know of good town centre moorings, I'd be grateful for your thoughts. Cheers all.

Looks a bit like my boat, except mine is a 55ft 6 berther with the escape hatch on the right hand side. I honestly don't get the snobbery about ex-Canaltime boats. I absolutely love mine, though admittedly I have had a few mechanical problems along the way. But who hasn't, eh?. The side escape doors mentioned also have a hatch in the roof which opens to provide a space big enough for my narrow, fit frame to squeeze through if I need to escape when in the lock, though what I'll be doing in the bedroom when I should be on deck or on the lockside, god only knows! I accept that not everyone is as skinny or as agile as me. Horses for courses. I too have been planning to fit a stove. My plan is to rip out the central cabin with the 2 single berths, and the second smaller toilet - I don't need 2. My intention is to place the stove, port side, just astern of where the toilet presently is. I will try to fit a double sofa bed so that my central bedroom becomes a lounge and the stove will be well placed to heat the boat fore and aft. I'll lose some under-bed storage that way, but I think the boat will look better for it. And hopefully my ex-Canaltime boat will last me for many years.

Garage by the services in Boroughbridge also does red diesel, and is reasonable about the split. This is the only canalside refueling point on the stretch between York Marina and Ripon. The BP garage in Ripon does red as well......but it's a bit of a walk from the canal!

I had a little mishap yesterday when the hose between the water filling point and the water tank came loose and flooded the bilge. I got a lot of it out using a wet and dry vac, but I can't get all of it out as I don't know where my inspection hatch is without ripping up all my lino and carpets. My boat is an ex canaltime boat, 55ft, built by South West Durham Steelcraft. Does anyone know if these boats have one before I start systematically ripping everything up?

I've got about 8 days off at the end of this month and I'm thinking about trying to explore the River Derwent and Pocklington canal from my base in Ripon. Has anyone on here done this? Any nuggets of useful information to impart, please? I thought I had read somewhere that the Derwent was closed, but googling only tells me that it's closed at Elvington lock upwards. I'm also interested in the journey back up through Naburn. I've done it from Selby lock before, and booked my passage through on the tide, but clearly not from further down river. I guess it's much harder to gauge coming upstream from a greater distance. Has anyone done this? Geoff

Hi Martyn Once you've left York, there are no proper moorings until you almost reach Linton - unless you want to nose into the bank at Nun Monkton. There's a mooring just before Linton for the pub in Skelton, the Dawnay Arms. I've moored there a couple of times for pub stops, but not overnight. I've heard they don't like people using the moorings if they're closed. But you can always ask. North out of Linton, there's very little until you get to Boroughbridge, except for the Aldwark Arms mooring on your right just after you've passed under the toll bridge, about 40 minutes out of linton. Never used it or seen it used. There are a few home made structures on the left which look a bit iffy, and I've never seen them used. Between Boroughbridge and Ripon, you can moor at Westwick Lock, there's plenty of space just before you go through, depending on the river levels. The River Ure gets quite a bit of high water if it has been raining in the Dales, and the moorings can sometimes be under water. Even in Summer. As previously said, Newby Hall is a no, but you're only less than 30 minutes from the start Of the Ripon canal and there's usually space to moor there. York to Boroughbridge isn't so exciting as there's not much to see. Boroughbridge to Ripon is not a bad run out. In Boroughbridge, best pub is the Black Bull in the top right hand corner of the Market Square. Nice pint of Taylor's Boltmaker. if you make it to Ripon, try the One Eyed Rat on Allhallowgate just off the city centre. Choice of 7 visiting real ales changed regularly and continental lagers if that's more to your taste. Enjoy the trip. Geoff
