  1. Great photos - we were there 2 weeks ago and went straight through the flood lock as the lock keeper had opened top and bottom gates. Amazing how quickly the river can change though (from fri pics to sat's pics).
  2. There is also a lesson in here for all of us - the information Canalchef found in the rubbish as to the identity of the depositor of the rubbish could have been used by a less scrupulous member of the public in an identity theft. We should all take care in what we put in our rubbish even if we use the BW provided facilities.
  3. Just name and shame him on here....if the tabloids pick up the story......well so be it
  4. At last someone understands my point - BW wouldn't get good grades on English GCSE grammar
  5. A short while ago this restriction notice arrived in my inbox Is it me being thick or do BW have some amazing new bit of technology that allows them to predict that the gate paddles will be leaking between noon and 4pm, and not before or after?
  6. Did you notice under the map the question from a "Jim McGoven" Nobody appears to have answered him .....
  7. Well thats hubby and I f***** as our Beta BD3 smokes all the time
  8. I suggested nothing of the sort. I have met quite a few adult men who would rather not let their parents know that they prefer men to women, and quite a few who enjoy both, but would still rather not have their mother know their preferences. What I meant in my post was that maybe Mum should find out if Son is interested in trying to find a "significant other" before trying to play matchmaker.
  9. Some marinas will let you moor your car (sorry park) there at a nominal cost. However we leave our car with a friend over the summer and he picks us up from train stations when we need the car for a bit.
  10. Surely the best way way to avoid listing on river moorings due to rising/falling water levels is not to moor of rivers
  11. Maybe Mum should find out if Son wants a a boyfriend or a girlfriend first Also how about posting a pic of Son to attract interest.......
  12. Thank you Martin for your very quick response.
  13. Anyone know whether the flood gates are open yet?
  14. We are doing a similar trip this year, but are planning on doing the Leeds Liverpool as opposed to the Rochdale - Martin - do you think this might be a wiser alternative route?
  15. According to the lock keeper at Torksy, BW hope to have the lock gates repaired at Stockwith for Friday - but he did add "Don't hold your breath". This has rather scuppered our plans to do the Chesterfield - so we are heading straight to Keadby tomorrow - where's the best mooring after the lock?
  16. Thank you all for your comments and suggestions. We've got to go to Lincoln as need the sanitary - but might well only stop for the day and return to Saxilby for the night. Adora Belle - I agree with Keeping Up - an anchor really should be a must, and a VHF radio can also be very useful when doing the River Trent.
  17. But then again its raining that bloody heavy its hard to see anything
  18. Snailspace hasn't made it to the Fossdyke (as far as I can tell)
  19. We are heading towards Lincoln (need to visit the services), and were hoping to spend a couple of days there - but where are the best moorings for a 60ft narrowboat?
  20. We've been moored near Sawley for a couple of days and have gone into the shop a few times to get milk, newspaper and other boat bits. On one visit there was a queue of half a dozen people at the main counter - all queuing to make a complaint! One of the women behind the counter asked if anyone had anything easy for her to deal with, a bloke replied he had a invoice to deal with - but it weren't going to be easy. We ended up walking out without the milk as no one was serving the till by the door - anyone could have easily walked out with any of their clothing or shoes that are displayed near the front of the shop.
  21. I am certain that BW have a secret mission to make it as difficult as possible for boaters to use services such as water so that they don't have to spend money maintaining or repairing the water pipes/services etc. Other examples of badly placed water services - the one below Kings Lock, right by the turning for the Middlewich Branch; The services on lock moorings at Grindley Brook (who thought that one up?); I remember one water point on the River Lee that could only be accessed whilst in the lock. I'm sure there are plenty more. The best services (& cleanest no doubt) are at Froghall at the terminus of the Caldon Canal - very few can get through the very low tunnel
  22. The best use for Rosie & Jim dolls are for what they make when you sell them on Ebay!
  23. Cassette or pump out - the choice is personal. Facilities for dealing with a cassette are more frequent and are generally FREE. Boat yards and BW services tend to charge for Pump outs - we've seen some charge £15 - it goes to show where theres muck theres money. Not with the winter just gone, but the 2 winters previous, a lot of boats with pump outs were frozen in and couldn't get emptied. I know which I'd prefer - I'd rather carry a cassette in the snow than have to go out and buy a porta potti as their boats were frozen in for weeks and the s**t tank was full. (Also we can keep as many spare cassettes as we can find space for). One thing about boaters - they'll all end up talking c**p in the end
  24. Also known as "Water skiing" Tying the rudder should help, or you could complain to the hire company and point out that if any damage is done to your boat by their hire boats you will be seeking compensation from them Alternatively - try mooring the other way round or see if there is a better spot in the marina available - away from the hire boats (or find another marina)
