  1. The best way to deal with any cold calls such as this is to say: 'Gosh, I'd be delighted to talk to you about your services, but first let me talk to you about Jesus ..............'
  2. I wish I'd seen this years ago when I was searching for one. I even searched the souvenier shops all over North Wales to find something that could be mounted on a tiller pin. Eventually I spotted a cast brass dragon mounted on a wooden plinth - in the flipping British Pavilion of the Epcot Centre in Florida. Cost me $40 in 1995, plus another tenner for Mick Seivewright to mount it for me! Dai (that's our dragon's name) looks the part though.
  3. I find this thread extermely banal (See what I did there?)
  4. Had a second alternator fitted to my LPWS4 Lister last year. The new one is 100amps, and now charges the leisure bats - no problem. The original 70amp alternator now charges the starter, but I'm not sure if the charging rate is as it should be. According to my Sterling Power Management panel, it starts charging at around 13 amps, but then over a period of maybe half an hour, this dwindles to one or two amps. Does this mean the battery's had all the charge it needs or is something amiss?
  5. I love the true story about the cat (or was it a dog) that was fitted with a magnetic collar to operate the cat-flap. It was regularly found in a state of some distress, either with some extraneous metal object attached to its neck, or worse, the poor animal was found firmly attached to a storage heater.

  10. What do others use to pump diesel from a Jerry can into the tank - it seems too risky to up-end it, even into a large tundish.
  11. There's a cracking butcher at Lymm
  12. Nah - let the gas collect in the bilge - kills the rats see.

  14. Just watched the excellent John Wayne movie 'Rooster Cogburn' and in one sequence Rooster and two others are on a crude rectangular raft at the mercy of the current, apart from a crude rudder. However, in one shot of the front of the raft, there is clearly a bow-wave a few inches high. Now I don't want to be picky, but doesn't this mean that the raft was travelling faster than the current, and therefore travelling under power? I know - sad, isn't it?
  15. Not seen Ken Barlow, but we did once find ourselves early one morning cruising the Llangollen alongside my wife's consultant urologist who was jogging along the towpath - does that count?
  16. The topic 'Anyone seen this boat?, Avoiding due payment' began with a plea from a surveyor for help in locating the owner of a boat he had surveyed, following non-payment of the fee. The OP stated that BW had refused to help, citing the Data Protection Act. Now, under certain circumstances, the DVLA will supply details of the owner of a licenced motor vehicle, for example in connection with non-payment of a parking fee - further details here: http://www.out-law.com/page-8439 Is it really illegal under the Data Protection Act for BW to supply details of a boat owner to someone whose bill has not been paid, and who therefore has good reason to ask for help, or are they taking the easy way out and, like so many official bodies do, hiding behind the act?
  17. We always, always moor here, on the loop round the corner from the Sea life Centre. Security cameras have you in view, guards patrol regularly (not that we've ever seen the slightest sign of trouble). Just up the steps is a handy Spar shop for your morning paper and other essentials. Don't think twice about it.
  18. Why should anyone made redundant not expect to access their pension in the normal way, depending upon their age? Pension schemes are independent of the company and unaffected by insolvency, apart from the extent to which they are contributed to by the company. (Oops! Forgot about Robert Maxwell, who raped his employees pension scheme.)
  19. That would be funny if we didn't all know that such barmy logic is quite likely to be put into practice.
  20. I'm sure that you have the utmost sympathy of every decent boater - a break-in is what we all dread, whether at home or on our treasured boats. Pick yourself up, dust yourself down, and start all over again, is the only advice on offer, I'm afraid.
  21. Since the end of our last month long trip in September, I've had a pain on the underside of my left foot, mainly at the heel. The symptoms are just as described here: http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art...rticlekey=46891 It's not severe enough to go to the quack, but it gets painful to stand for any period - I think that the pressure on the underside of the foot from opening lock gates may be a contributing factor. Anyone else suffer thus?
  22. Yes - put one in - but put it next to the galley, so you get ventilation whilst cooking, and get to look out too.
  23. There's one, near Tewkesbury I think - a broad-beam with an actual glass and upvc conservatory built onto one end. Obviously not meant to go anywhere so bridges aren't a problem!
